The resignation hinges on testimony he gave as to the fitness of Edwin M. Pauley, a prominent oil man, to hold a position as undersecretary of the Navy, in which position he would have a great deal to do with the Navys oil policy. This is not the first time that the oil interests have by underhanded means sought to gain special privileges. In fact, as a group, those who direct the big oil interest of the nation have demonstrated that they are about as unscrupulous and selfish a crowd as ever negotiated a bribe ?r subborned a witness. With the interest there is in oil development in the Basin, we should be aware of the selfishness and single mindedness of the oil trust. These people are looking out for their own interests only, and not for the welfare of the landowners of the Basin. We have said before, and we repeat it: It is our sincere belief that the interests of the land owners of the Basin will best be served by the independent organizations who will drill in this area. It has been, shown repeatedly that the big oil interests generaly develop first the lands they control, and by that we mean the lands that they or their henchmen own the entire oil interest, and even the royalties they offer in their leases are very slow to be realized by the land owners. The entire oil rights are generally acquired by the oil interests before they drill on newr lands. This same selfish interest that is demonstrated nationally in the Pauley case goes right on through the workings of the oil crowd, and we feel sure that time will demonstrate that if the Basin is developed soon as an oil center it will be by the work of independent drillers, and not by the big oil companies.
