Aly-to- AIi-3- . P-T- A New Hunt Rules Would Save Meat Again the annual deer hunt is in full swing, and the earlier reports seem to indicate that those who chose the higher country came back mostly empty-hande- d while those in the lower areas got their bucks as a general rule. And again, the annual slaughter of does goes on which in itself is not so bad, for it is the opinion of many that there are hardly enough bucks in the hills to keep up full propagation. What does hurt is to run across a doe lying in the hills where some hunter has killed her, and because he had no doe license, left her for the coyotes to devour. For many years, it has been the practice of the game commission to stipulate a buck deer with horns on all regular hunting licenses, and then, in sections where it is thought the deer are multiplying too rapidly, to issue special doe permits. But this neither stops nor noticably limits the killing of does; it merely makes it illegal so that the does killed alare either left to waste ways accidentally of course or are smuggled in and the hunter continues, trying to get his buck. There is, it would seem, a logical solution to this, which has long been advocated by some of the sportsmen: the issuing of a license for one deer, regardless of sex or age, and then strictly enforcing the law to see that each hunter gets only one. There are very few hunters who would not try just as hard as they do under the present system to get a buck, but when the long shot on the distant sidehill downs a doe instead of a buck, the hunter would still be privileged to bring home his kill out in the open without worrying about dodging a game - - Classified Tracy Roberts E.
