A as Agent Welcomed fr The public attitude toward the insurance agent seems to have undergone a very decisive change in recent years. He is no longer regarded as a pest by the bulk of citizens. Proof of that is found in the results of a recent widespread survey concerning life insurance, in which this, among other questions, was asked: What is your feeling toward life inSeventy-on- e surance agents? men replying per cent of the said they were favorable to the agent, as did 74 per cent of the women. This change is partly due to a growth of wisdom on the part of the public, which better realizes the service and necessity of life insurance. And it is also due to the fact that the modern life insurance agent is better informed than his predecessor, and far better able to service his clientele well. The dairy herd improvement association is comprised of dairymen who in employing a trained man to visit their farms each month, weigh and test and milk as well as figure the feed costs and profits and assist with herd management. Anthony Colletti is supervisor for Box Elder, Weber, Davis and Morgan counties. The dairy herd improvement program gives the farmer definite information so that he can efficiently cull out low producers and makes possible the selection of heifers from the highest producing cows for replacement purpose s, Mr. Rich explained. LIABILITY LAWS PROTECT OWNER FROM DAMAGES Herds The elimination of diseased dairy cattle, primarily those infected with tuberculosis and Bangs disease, has been markedly expanded during the past two years under government programs, E. W. Gaumnitz, chief of the dairy section, agricultural adjustment administration, has announced. During the period July 1, 1934, to July 1, 1936, over four million herds, comprising 47,382,164 cattle, were tested for tuberculosis, and more than one-ha- lf million cattle reacted and were removed. For Bangs disease, 683,270 herds, comprising nearly ten million cattle, were tested during this two-yeperiod, and 83S.114, or 8.4 per cent of the total number, reacted and were removed. In Utah, approximately 120,000 head of cattle have been tested for Bangs disease in the past two years, according to Dr. D. E. Madsen of the U. S. A. C. who has examined the blood samples. Utah is also on the accredited list of states. There were 9, SOI herds tested for mastitis and 28,439 cattle affected with this disease were eliminated, reports Mr. Gaumnitz. Indemnity payments under these programs amounted to $9,388,396 on the tuberculosis cattle, $20,876,943 on Bangs disease reactors, and $849,806 on mastitis cattle, a total of slightly more than thirty-on- e millions of dollars. These payments were made possible by appropriations of funds under the Act of 1934, and other measures, Mr. Gaumnitz said. The Act authorized the appropriation of $50,000,-00- 0 for eliminating diseased cattle and for making advances to the federal emergency relief administration for the purchase of surplus dairy products for relief use. , Under amendments to the agricultural adjustment act, approved August 24, 1935, $10,000,000 was set up for these purposes, and in addition, this sum can be used for experimental purposes pertaining to the eradication of cattle disease. The department of agriculture appropriation act, approved June 4, 1936, provides a total of $29,714,000 for use in (1) eliminating diseased cattle, (2) the purchase of surplus dairy products, and (3) experimental work pertaining to elimination of disease in cattle.
