It will be the court of last resort for the champions of many county, state and district fairs and stock shows, climaxing the 1933 season. Despite low prices and depression, the famous breeders of America have kept their herds intact and have continued building up still better cattle. An amazing feature of the depression period has been the continued strong demand for good quality stock. In fact, cowmen assert the only men who have been able to make money during the past three years are those who are raising high quality stock. Of outstanding importance will be the big Hereford show. Secretary R. J. Kinzer, of the American Hereford Cattle Breeders association, states that at least seven states will send their champion Hereford herds to Los Angeles for the big show. Winter feeding ia one of the most' practical measures by which ordinary sportsmen can help replenish the supply of upland game birds, says Winter Feeding of Wild Life On Northern Farms, Just published by the U. S. Department of Agriculture aa Miscellaneous Publication The author, Wallace B. Grange, was formerly of the Bureau of Biological Survey. These game birds, it is pointed out,' suffer little from exposure to cold or from natural enemies If they are well fed and are near good cover. ' It is urgent, declares Mr. Grange, that Interested persons provide adequate winter feeding in their communities. So many adverse factors are depleting game birds that every effort to correct environmental deficiencies should be made. - Unless definite remedial measures Inaugurated very soon, in most sections of the country the army of upland game bird hunters will be further restricted in their sport. The supply of fame is being destroyed faster than it is being replenished by natural means. The publication gives directions for organizing a g campaign and discusses methods, the value of which has been proved by actual experience. It recommends permanent feeding stations, food patches, and regularly tended shelters, but also points out that almost any kind of feeding will, in : emergencies; aid wild life for short periods. Feeding operations, it emphasizes, should be well planned and sustained.
