A. Ericson near Beaver Dam in Box Elder county, through the cooperation of the forestry department of the Utah State Agricultural College and the extension service, under the direction of Paul M. Dunn, extension forester. Willow Creek, a small stream, has presented a serious problem by eroding a deep gulley for a distance of several miles, destroying considerable fertile farm land and endangering buildings in some cases. Twenty years ago, the stream started cutting deep into the loose Boil and today it is over 30 feet deep and 200 feet wide in places. The project which is intended td stop the cutting of the stream, Is a combination of tree and grass planting on the slopes and a series of small dams In the bottom of the gully. Willow cuttings were planted along the stream bank, and on both lower slopes, with several rows of hardwood trees, black locust and Siberian elm, planted on the upper slopes and on the top of the bank. Several kinds of grass was sown on the upper slopes, to aid in holding the soil in place. Four small brush dams were placed across the stream, in a distance of 100 feet, to serve as barriers, which will lesson the stream flow and allow the settling of the silt. Green willow posts were used in the frame work of the dam, with the intention that they would take root and grow, thus forming more pliable and permanent barriers against the water. Considerable amount of labor and material has been expended on this gulley problem by the community in the past years, with some very good results. Mr. Ericson during the last five years, has planted many willows and they have shown good results for short distances. Last year the forestry department, under the direction of Professor Charles M. Genaux, set out several more willows. If the result of this years work appears to be favorable, considerable more planting will bcf done, according to Mr. Dunn. The students of the planting class of the forestry department assisted in this excellent project Farmers in Utah who have erosion problems are urged to consult with Mr. Dunn concerning proper plantings to assist In combatting the menace.
