Four-bamatches are usually referred to In this country as foursomes, but, In reality, a foursome is only a two-baaffair. In England two players form a sids and play with one ball. This was common in Scotland twenty-fiv- s years ago. I remember at St. Andrews when the four-ba- ll fad came Into vogue. It was popular for a while as a novelty, but never could take the place of a real foursome In the heart of the Scotchman. It Is seldom that foursomea are heard of in this country today. Each player likes to play his own ball and make some match attempt at scoring. A four-ba- ll play Is an entirely different proposition from the regular foursome style and much more Interesting. -When Taylor and Herd were over here they asked to have an exhibition; arranged for foursome play. This was done once or twice and tt proved a novelty, but the American public who paid to see the exhibitions qltd not car for It for a whole were Foursomes days entertainment. staged once in a white In the morning, but the big match of the day was a four-ball played In the afternoon. For exhibition purpoees the gallery is always keen to see the four players drive. They are all so Interested when It cornea to the green, as the putting and approaching of four plavers gives them a greater variety than two. ll ll cause of Its sociability. When a man shuts down his desk at noon on Saturday, he la not thinking of going out on tha links for a strenuous afternoon's game of golf with an opponent that he is not keen about playing with. There is no doubt hut that he will get more actual play out of this match, hut not one in a,hundred arejooklng for this sort of thing. What they want Is a friendly game In which four players take part, where there Is sure to be a lot of conversation and kidding The real harm In a four-ba- ll match play comes In ths manner In which we play the ggme. To play a good four-ba- ll match one must be constantly pressing for He must be trying all ths advantage. time to get birdies, and to do this he must often run th risk of ruining his own score. good-natur- ed On Taking Chances. A player will necessarily want to get as long a drive as possible. He will also , want to lay the next shot dead to the pin, and, when on the green and a considerable length from ths cup, he must make a bold attempt to sink the putt If heis to make bis score count for a half or a win. Ono Four-ba- ll matches are very destructive to one's game. It is surprising that there are as many good golfers in this country as there are, and when it Is considered four-ball Is much that there play at the clubs on week-enand holidays. It is very seldom that two players go out for a single match, yet this Is ths only method whereby one can be sure of Improving his game and keeping it up to a high Standard. Plavers like to take part In a four-ba- ll match for sociability sake. There Is a kv of fun to be had, but it la very seldom that the game Is taken seriously. It Is a question In my mind whether this form of golf which provides a tot of futr and amusement is not of greater value for health and recreation then a game that Is taken seriously. Golf has grown in America to a great extent be- - must also attempt at times to make futile effort to carry a trap, bunker, water hazard or to play over the tops of trees or other obstructions for advantage. All of this is spectacular when it comes off as planned, but It Is ruinous to one's game when Indulged In too frequently. Golfers should go out and play in single matches or competitions oftener. Unles ha does this he will never be able to settle down to the serious business of tournament play. If one .care to take the game seriously with th Idea of becoming a champion or a first-claTournament player, this method of procedure is th only way to arrive at a successful end. If one Is playing golf for only the fun of It. he can get plenty of sport out of four-ba- ll matches, and can permit the tournament end of the game to go by the boards. Chick Evans said recently that he wondered if he had not missed a lot of real fun by not being a duffer, and I am beginning to think the same way about it. It Is different with professionals, as we think of golf more as a business, and one who makes a living out of the game can afford to take it seriously.
