OGDEN, A Second attempt of prleonera to break from the county jail within the last ten daya waa early thla morning when Clara I'prter, night jailer, made hla rounda of .. the prleonera tank. ed over a large hole which had been aawed by ' prleonera more than a year ago had been entirely cut looee through the sawing of the heade of twelve rivet. The rivet heada had been eawed oft from the in- -, . aide of the tank and heada made, of aoap covered the work of the prleonera Jailer Porter noticed that the rlveta on the outside of the tank protruded and , he investigated, Finding the patch looee, he eumnioned Sheriff Richard Plncock, Frank W. Ryan, being held on a worthless check charge, was taken from I the tank and nuestloned and admitted the aawlng.- He told the officers that . 'he had secreted a hacksaw blade in the Inti cuspidor after the rivets. lhe saw was located.sawing There were elghteeh prisoners In the , tank and It la believed that they all had fi . knowledge of the plot to escape. Ryan denied that the others took any part, however, and said he planned to escape within an hour of the time the loose .. patch Was discovered. A leaf of an automobile spring waa found In hit bunk i and he Admitted that after hie escape from the tank ht had planned to pry out bricks In the jail wall and escape through the boiler room. Ryan waa taken before Judge James N. Kimball thla morning and entered a plea of guilty to having passed a fic titious check for $U upon the McIntyre I Vug company September 8. He asked that his .sentence - be postponed until A Monday. Sheriff Pin rock said today that he would ewear to complaints against Ryan 'charging ;him with two attempts to break jail. v As a result of the two attempts enm-In- g within ten dayafcherlff Plncock tonew regulations which day Instituted forbid any visitors within the Jail. Here-... after the prisoner who Is visited Is to be brought to an outer cell, where he may talk with the caller through a small mesh screen. It Is believed that friends of JEtyan- have passed the saws to him A patch which had been riveted - , The weather In the ,norihla.nd haa reached the point when not every day id ultabla for golf, in fact, one I indeed lucky to get In one round a week, and If he Uvea very far north he has long ago stored hit chibs fob the wlntsr. There are occasional days when hitting a few balls kn practice will do a lot of good toward keeping the waist line down, but It la not such a arrest help to one's gams, for mors reasons than on. Ths weather being cold, the hands are not warm eno.ugh to give the proper touch to tha shot, and thers la a tendency to hurry tho shots. Then, too, whan the ground la wst and muddy and no roll Is obtained, there la not that pleasant thrill that ws get. out of a drive In the summertime. Iron club play Is about the asms thing. But tha game need not be discarded There le the rug at home In altogether. the living room or In somg other convenient place, where one can do a lot of practicing with the putter. This can be dona as welt at home a on the putting green out on tha llnkh. All that one requires Is to learn the putting touch and then to learn to gauge distances. It one Is a 'beginner, It would be possible to become a very excellent putter just bypraetlelng on the carpet. Many devices have been Invented to represent golf hole or to answer the purpose. One1 of the latest devices of this sort that ran across was a round brush fastened to a rod that made secure on a base about a foot away. The bail going Into the brueh stopped If hit about right, but If hit too hard It ran through. Other devices have been made of tin or brass. u Putting at Object Ball. One does not "need anything In the Chape of a golf ho'e to learn to putt well. I will give you a simple l.ttle Idea of bow It can be done without the aid of a hole and be just as effective. Take teveral balls and put them on the y. Try a Little Coue Stuff on It. When a person believes that he can any putt, no matter how. long, the chances are that he will come closer than hole keeps thinking that- he Is going to miss It. There la an old truism in golf that, both in approaching and putting, for every one bail that panose the pin One go'fer broke stop short. himself of th'e habit by a system that cost him money. Every, time he was xhort he gave & cents to a worthy charity. The Institution he sent the money to did ngt get very much after the first week. Another player had a penalty system. He gave his caddis a nickel every time he took three putta end the caddie was willing to gamble also and gave him back a nickel every time he holed out In one when on the green. Old advice was to stand any way that was comfortable. To putt off the right foot, or, that- Is, with the ball nearer the right foot, and to rent the right arm on the right leg. Thla is not good advice. Putt off the left foot, with the weight on the left leg. Use the right hand to .. do the bulk of the work. If the favorite putter does not work, a and another while asldd for It try lay one. Take one- - aa totally afferent as possible. Take enough time to line' up the putt thoroughly, but do not take too long, as It Is posable to lone the line by standing too long .over the balk If he nlne-ty-nt- - lf BeU Syndicate ) during their recent visits. Beet to Ash for Sliding Scale - Caught Trying Past Stolen M-a- Four Provo Charges -- Face Gambling the-tabl- , Charge of Fictitious "The semifinal game between East high and Logan apparently will bring forth some unpleasant discussion and in order that foot hall fans may know the exact status of East high In regard to tho eligibility of Growth er, J will state that L was informed from several sources strictly outside of our East high organisation that Mr. Crowther was now competing In his fifth year of high school athletics, and I aaa urged strongly to enter an official protest against Logan high using him, and even against the right of Logan high to represent their division. "I was aware of thla for more than a week and took no action whatsoever, but pressure practically forced ms to call Mr. Ashton, the state arbitrator. and ask him hla views on the Crowther situation. Mr. Ashton Informed mo that he had all the facta concerning Mr. Crowther, and that he had Issued him An eligibility card, and thaL In eo far as he could determine, Mp Crowther .waa allgihle. He also stated that 1 could look over his correspondenadj In the matter and satisfy mvself, Aid suggested that I write him officially regarding the same. This I did not do. Mr. Ashton suggested that I attend the meeting of the ezecutlve committee of the association, which was being held that evening, November 8, and present my case. I attended this meeting and stated that I was in no way making a protest, officially or Informally, but merely asking for an Investigation so that I could inform several of my Immediate friends that I had, to a certain extent, heeded their suggestions. 'I further stated that East high was ready and perfectly willing o play Logan with Mr. Crowther in the lineup, and that wo wanted to face the strongest team that Logan high could put forth. Although I felt fairly certain of my grounds that Mr. Crowther was Ineligible, still I felt equally certain that we would win, Crewther or no. We expected a hard game, and If we really were to hecome atate champion that Is, If we defeated the winner ef the Boxelder-Wasatc- h game we wanted to have no setup teams, such as Logan might have been without Crowther, when the entire Logan offense seemed to bo built around him. We went to Logan expecting Crowther to play, and on our arrival there the divisional representative Informed me not officially, however that Mr. Crowther had been barred. In spite of this Information, our players were not informed In th least concerning the matter, and not until being told by thoee connected with the Logan team did they have the slightest information concerning the Crowther affair. Before the game started I .anked the officials if they had any Information from Salt Lake concerning Crowther, and Mr. Warner said that he had not, but tf I cared to make a protest that I could make It either to him or to th official scorer. This waa not done. i "This statement ts given merely to correct any misinformation that may have gained currency concerning East high. Th athletlcal relationship between East high and Lqtan hat always been of the highest order, especially In football and basketball, and East high does not wish to mar the friendship displayed at the clot of our game Friday, when members of both teams greeted bn another with hearty handehakea." ey WRIGHT FUNERAL TODAY.
