W hlle there remains some question concerning the commercial phase of the Shiprock well, oil of an exceptionally high quality was encountered at shallow depth and in sufficient quantity to warrant the hope for a commercial field. The test hole was drilled on the Hogback structure, about twelve miles east and a little south of the Shiprock Indian agency. Oil of paraffin base and testing 60 Beau me was encountered at a depth of 776 feet In what appears to be a stray sand In the Mancos, about 206 feet above the i Dakota. The discovery came unexpectedly and the sand had been penetrated but about thirty inches when drilling was suspended. The well did not flow Immediately, but oil steadily rose In the hole for twenty-fou- r hours or thereabouts, af- ter which sufficient pressure was In evidence to force the oil over the top of the casing. Tankage for 1000 barrels was hiirrledlv brought from the McElmo test of the Midwest and nearly two weeks after the discovery the well was given a snort time test. Officials in charge of the test reported that the well flowed at the rate of about 300 barrels a day. Flattering Models in Tailored Not Lavender v V - Discovery Starts Rash. As usual when a discovery well Is re nd lease ported, oil scouts, geologists men rushed to the scene. Most of the geologists and a few of the scouts remained In the vicinity of Shiprock, but with few exceptions the lease men listened to the terms under which acreage might be acquired, immediately- lost in terest and stirred up great clouds of dust In getting beyond the confines of the Navajo reservation. The field may be a paradise for geologists, and In winter months it may have Its appeal for the scouts, but at no time - Is it a paradise or even a pleasant place for lease hound. x The discovery well and the Hogback structure are within the limits of the Navajo. Indian reservation. And for the most part the area within the Navajo reservation Is what Is generally known as treaty land, which can be disposed of only by the Indians with the approval of the secretary of the inmust act in terior; but first the Indians tribal council, and there seem to be few on are men who lease speaking terms with the Navajo language or who are Inclined to toast or. cool their heels on the Ban Juan desert awaiting an indefinite meeting of the tribal council. - v- - but a very vhic air is associated with old lace this Fall. When about three feet of the new hole had been made it was observed that water showing strong sulphur Impregnation was coming up with the oil. Inasmuch as no water was encountered above the oil and no parting was found In the sand, there seemed no but that the bit had penetrated question a water stratum below the oil, but in the same sand. A report of the condition brought representatives of the bureau of mines to the camp with Instruction to cement at ence. If the instructions are carried out, there Is little likelihood of further drilling for another thirty days. While the appearance of Water In the well was disappointing, it was not necessarily surprising, because the exceptional quality of the oU Indicated an unnatural occurrence. The logical conclusion, because of the character of the oil, would be that It was migratory and in all probability It came from a lower horizon There Is strong hope that the source of the oil Is the Dakota formation. When the oil was encountered there was a question In the minds of the geologists in the field as to whether the sand was the Dakota or what they termed a stray sand above the- Dakota. Further Investigations, however, have led to the conclusion generally that the Dakota has not been encountered as yet While the sand temporarily listed ss "stray" prpbably does not correlate with any sand found in the Mancos In Utah and Colorado, the croppings In the San Juan basin indicate persistency over a large portion of that area. Its thickness varies from about ten to thirty feet and generally It Ilea about 200 feet above the Dakota. Egypt in new-arrival- By Their Color ye shall know them. At the council meeting, about a month ago, the o Navajoes approved two leases on the dome, about twenty miles south of disand to declined Shiprock, arbitrarily cuss probably a score of others. Covering land In various parts of the reservation. The leasee approved were for Lockhart & Hall, presumably representing the Producers & Refiners company and independent Oklahoma operators. As an example of what is facing the lease hounds, the three successful applicants wer negotiating with the Indians a year or longer before leases' were obtained. (Vhlle the policy of the Indiana with regard to future oil development has not been announced.
