The Mart Itself, which houses more than six hundred of the outstanding manufacturers, wholesalers and importers, Is destined to become the new buying capital of the United States, If not the world. Tbe purpose of the Mart la to bring a great community of mercantile leaders to present the latest Ideas, patterns, styles, designs and colors la merchandise, developed by the worlds foremost manufacturers. More than 85 per cent of the 4,000,000 square feet of display space has been leased and buyers from all parts of the country are beginning to come to this new central market. The Mart embodies the modern ideas of a concentrated market, of bringing the buyer to market Instead of attempting by means of sample cases, traveling salesmen and trunks to Inadequately take tbe market to the merchant, said Claude A. Welles, general manager of the Mart. The arrangement of the display floors has been scientifically worked out with the object of conserving the buyers time and energy to the utmost, providing exevery necessary aid to expedite his amination of goods and for his convenience while In the market. 27 Mile of Corridor "The buyer can enter the Mart In the morning, attend to all his business and personal affairs during tbe all his buying day, and do practically without leaving the shelter of one roof until bedtime. The swinei greatest breeding establishments situation, so far as price levels are'i of the United States. The bull sale, concerned, continues about the same held the week of the I as last year. The spring pig crop was slightly less than a year ago. This is the best Information we have to forecast for the fall run. We must keep in mind, however, that the purchasing power is about less than a year ago, with all emmodity prices substantially less than last year. While we hear a lot of talk about; what the dollar will buy, we must remember that there are about 250 million less dollars In circulation and that the withdrawal of this channels money from commercial, must reflect itself all along the line. At present prices of hogs, barley will pay better than $2.00 per cwt. in feeding and fattening of hogs, whereas it is worth less than $1.00 per cwt for other purposes. How can you make money any faster than to convert this feed into pork at present prices? The farmer who raises his own pigs and his feed, is in a very independent position and if he sticks to the business year in and year out be WM find the best financial returns by using his concentrates and roughage for the fattening of livestock, and while on that subject lets make a note of some of the complaints we have recently had on the improper finishing of hogs by the premature feeding of grain before the pig was ready. So far as growth and constitution are concerned, there is no better feed than alfalfa. A little grain in the evening as the pig grows, will put some flesh on it and start it on the way to fattening until the pig pretty well gets its growth. The use of concenrates alone does not make for economical growth. Alfalfa as a rule will give the most economical growth. Increase the amount of barley or other concentrates as the pig Is advances. The use of the best way to do this, but the should not be available in the alfalfa patch for pigs until they have! reached 70 or 75 pounds. Minerals should certainly be considered In the ration at this time. one-thi- rd self-feede- rs self-feed- er The decision of the American Hereford Cattle Breeders association to hold their big show in connection with the Los Angeles Christmas Livestock Show, November 29th to December 6th, is the biggest thing that has happened to the west because it means the beginning of an active campaign to introduce new type and blood lines of the Hereford breed throughout the west and the southwest. These people undoubtedly recognize the for feedlot finishing to,, get an all year round beef supply instead of spending too much on the range. We will have hand-writi- ng show, during will be a real event, with the prospects of foreign buyers; so it looks like we are well under way to the establishment as a permanent Institution of a major livestock show in Los Angeles that will be of Immense benefit to the livestock interests of the west and southwest. These affairs, however, are only built up by having the fullest cooperation of all of the people, and we are all interested In the success of livestock because it is so important to the success of agriculture. It is proper to locate these shows in large cities because they are of great benefit in bringing together peoplel of the country and the city. We have always contended that the success of any city depended upon the development of surrounding country. We want the help of every western state in building up this show because, after all, we are one community depending upon each other for our dally bread, so to speak. The west has developed to a point where we can and undoubtedly will? support a major livestock show. it now more than ever because It is the greatest contructlve force livestock conditions. Of course, the show is for all beef breeds, as well as swine and sheep, and extensive premiums will be provided for the different breeds and classifications. Premium lists will be available about July 15, 1930. We-nee- for-bette- r Need Not Become Citizen Is no law compelling un alien-tbecome naturalized. This Is a privilege and Is not compulsory.
