Theres (By Norman Lee) nobody quite as hungry as a thresher. He wants food and lots of it. Hence, housewives cooking for threshers (Continued from last issue.) Columbus, Ohio, is a beautiful city, distinguished this year by the convention of the N. E. A which was attended by a number of educators from Drigham City, among them Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Hinckley, Eli F. Lee and wife and Jesse W. Hoopes, member of the local Board of Education. were there from Representatives every state in the Union and from our insular possessions. The convention had not begun when we were there, but preparations were under way for the occasion. We took considerable satisfaction in the number of states we passed through, or visited, on the way. West Virginia accommodatingly shoved a long narrow wedge up between Ohio and Pennsylvania and built the city of Wheeling there Its largest and most important city. Otherwise we should have missed that state entirely. About 35 miles east of Wheeling is Washington, Pa. Route 40 changes its course there and follows a southeasterly direction to Washington, D. C. However, Mary was to visit with friends in Meadeville, in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania and it was necessary that she take the train from Pittsburg to avoid changing cars, so we drove on northeasterly about 25 miles to Pittsburg. We got there at 5 ocolck and it seemed to us that at least half of the 20,000,000 automobiles in the United States were out on the streets. We had driven through several large cities all right, but this was a little different. There were so many bridges to negotiate and definite rules to observe that I was soon bewildered. We wanted to reach the Lake Erie railroad station. We could see it and drive by it on the right side of the street, but there! A were the signs, No Left Turns. kindly disposed citizen finally helped us find a way. The city is built right on the spot where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to make the Ohio river. As for the city, the business and manufacturing sections are right down in the river bottom, but the residences are built on higher ground in all directions. One can scarcely imagine anything prettier than the homes around Pittsburg for 20 or 30 miles out into the country. Its a long way from the level country west of the city down to the bottom and a long climb up again on the southeast the route we. took to higher ground. We saw the first Westinghouse factories here. There were literally miles of them along the Monongahela. We stopped at a farm house that night about 40 miles out in a small place called Greens-burWe got settled just in time to hear the broadcast of the Sharkey-Schmellin- g fight, so called. It was! the first radio we had heard since leaving home and the fiasco that the fight turned out to be didnt entertain us much. We were disgusted and turned Off the radio and went to bed. We didnt hear another till we got to Flushing, Long Island. We knew from the lessons learned in school days, that the battlefield of Gettysburg was somewhere between there and Washington, D. C. Inquiry gained the information that by leaving Route No. 40 for a few miles we) could go right through it without must buy in large quantities. With all that preparation I was not at all prepared to see what I saw there. The lay of the country conforms to preconceived notions, but didnt know that it is the best marked battlefield in the world; that there are 19 or 20 miles of streets now laid out to permit of access ta every part of that wide area, I dont' know now how many troops took part nor the number of states the soldiers came from, but there are scores of monuments raised to the memory of those who laid down their lives therei both North and South. It was one of the most sanguinary battjes ever fought in thisi country. In the National Cemetery there lie buried 3,555 of the slain, of whom 979 are unknown. As I said, there are many fine monuments erected there, but one that elicited my admiration and sympathy, not be-- I cause he lost, but because be was always such a heroic figure to me, is that of General Robert E.
