The contractors do not object to automobiles and wagons passing over the unfinished road and certainly the walking public will never make a howl. A PUBLIC DANGER. During the recent high winds, a number of overhanging signs along Main street have been a real menace s to the safety and even life of passing underneath them. If there is not an ordinance regulating the hanging of such signs in order to insure them being fastened securely, such an action would seem to be Any one of the hanging necessary. on street would kill a man the signs dead if it should drop on him during a wind storm. pedes-train- PSEUDO ADVERTISING There is an aggregation operating on the street which is reputed to be a motion picture producing company. From what we have seen we would infer that it is a scheme to gel money from some of the merchants by a trick of filming a novel and time-worstory in which mercantile houses are pictured and used in the theme as it unfolds the experiences of a little colored boy and a supposed tramp. This morning the aggregation was set up in front of a firm which h.s not spent a penny in newspaper advertising, so far as this paper is corcorncd, for a number of years, and its patronage of the other paper published in this city would not pay the wages of one of And the office force for one week. yet this same merchant runs td the newspapers whenever he has a complaint about people trading out of town or anything else that affects his n . business, and frankly tells the editors that they ought to write up the situation unsparingly. But when the editors call on him for advertising matter he has nothing. We dont know just what this pseudo moving picture scheme is costing the merchants, but we say without fear of con SCHOOL SPIRIT. There is many a hard working father and mother who are making sacrifices of a personal nature in order that their sons and daughters might be who given a high school education, feel that the spirit at the big county school is being directed in the wrong way and as a result the boys and girls are getting notions into their heads that run counter to good common sense. Complaints have been made of the many social functions, the modish style of dress, the cash require ments produced by the refreshment stands and so forth, all of which, it is maintained, tend to implant in the hearts of the students a desire for pleasure rather than a desire to acquire an education that will fit and prepare them for usefulness in life. And to the fathers and mothers who are making a sacrifice in order to educate ther children, the condition has become an alarming one. Where excessive pleasures are indulged in and no restraint is placed upon the spending of money, disrespect of discipline naturally results for once a youth or maiden gets to going the pace, it is a mighty difficult matter to get them to see the folly of their course and hold them in check. They chafe under restrictions whether they are of the home nature or in the school and like the exploding of a cap it only requires a word to start a rebellion. And just one more thought. When school spirit, if that is the proper term, impels a student body to override the counsel of the principal, it is high time that the school spirit is changed for just as sure as such an attitude maintains progress will cease and chaos reign. There is altogether too little regard for law and order in the world today and the great menace is Bolshevism. The to civilization with this thing deal to only way wherever it bhows its head is to crush it. Proclamations calling upon the people to give War Savings Stamps and Treasury Savings Certificates as Christmas presents have been askei of the governors of all the states in the Twelfth Federal Reserve District and mayors of the larger cities by Governor John U. Calkins of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank. Not only lias the Governor appealed to state executives and mayors but similar ap- payments, if desired. peals have gone to clergymen These the district. throughout measures will be supplemented by a vigorous campaign in many other ways to bring about wide purchases of Government securities as holiday gifts. Governor Calkins said: Economists are agreed that the present exorbitant level of prices that constitute not only an economic but a social menace is caused to a great extent by a spending spree being indulged in by the people. Indulgence in luxuries, which, of course, causes increases in the necessities of life, has raised prices generally to such unheard of heights that Christinas buying this year promises a dangerous climax. We, therefore, appeal to you to call upon the people of your state to forego the giving of the usual Christmas gifts this year and instead give securities of the United States Government, such as Thrift and War Savings Stamps, Treasury Savings Certificates and Liberty Bonds. There could be no more timely effort at stabilization of prices and production than such action upon your part and the part of the people, a majority of whom, I am sure, would answer your call. It is not to be expected that boys and girls should be men and women in a day. Some people live to a good old age and still fail to achieve manhood, but high school students are old enough to appreciate the fact that life is a serious proposition and it is up to each one to make a success of it. There is only one royal road to success and that Is over the road of hard work. Dancing and parties, pies and candy, frolics and contests may be all good and necessary in their place but when the desire to possess these supercedes the desire to get ahead in the world you can put it down that the inRead Th Box Elder rxews and keep dividual who is burdened with such a abreast of the Umes 11.50 a year. desire is tgoing to prove a failure.
