Molly reaches her destination and Is installed as school mistress. At a barbecue, the Virginian procures an Introduction to Molly and proposes to her. He is refused, sharing the same fate as several others. Trampas is present at the same festivities and starts to make vile comments upon Molly, but the Virginian forces him to admit himself a liar. Trampas has cultivated Steve, who has fallen upon evil ways, and he and several others have become cattle thieves. The cattle raisers deputize the Virginian at the head of a posse to capture the gang. Steve and one of the others are captured while Shorty and Trampas escape. In spite of the Virginians deep friendship for Steve, he has a stern duty to perform. At sunrise of the next day, the two rustlers paid the penalty. Molly, who has learned to love the Virginian, learns of the hanging and Is horrified at his part in it Trampas makes his way to some renegade Indians and Incites them to kill the Virginian. They take his trail and he is severely wounded, ter killing a number of them. af- Molly leaves to return to her home in Vermont, and comes across the With her Virginian lying helpless. aid they manage to return to the settlement Molly takes care of the Vir- ginian. and nurses him back to health and also promises to become his wife. Just before the wedding Trampas breaks out and threatens to kill the Virginian. The Virginian seeks him out and after It is all over, he and Molly take up the thread of their dreams iu peace.
