We are decidedly pleased with the many kind things said of us this past week by our patrons and friends. In return for these expressions of pood will we can simply say that we shall continue to exert ourselves to the utmost to merit such praise. It strikes us that it has been suff- iciently proven that the mountain shale placed on certain of our streets and walks last year as an experiment, is worth using. There is a vast difference in favor of this material between the streets where it has been used and where the common soil exists. We should like to see more put down thl3 season. For some time past a number of our young men have been practicing the manly art" of boxing, in a yard just off Main street. Some of them have developed considerable It has shown to us also that this city numbers among its inhabitants some fine specimens of physical manhood. If the boys could be made to understand the necessity of preserving their natural health and splendid bodies it would be a fine thing indeed. But, we are grieved to see so many of them becoming confirmed loafers. It is one of the most de structive habits to body and mind that they could possibly acquire. What wonderful service those finely developed bodies Could render to the world if their owners but willed it. It may not always be possible for the boys to get work where they can earn money, but it is safe to say that there are a good many things that could be found to do at any time around home. The joy and satisfaction it would bring to those dear fathers and mothers who have spent the better part of their lives in rearing such magnificent boys, would be pay a thousand times. Try it a few times, boys, and see if It isnt true. Couldnt Brigham City support a good comfortable, clean hospital with arrangements to accomodate all kinds of patients who are more easily taken care outside their homes? AVe have a good hospital here now, but it is insufficient. A place several times as large as the one we have i3 needed. Someone who has any knowledge of such an Institution might do well to consider the matter, AVe believe it could be piadq to pay. TO SELL 0& NOT TO ount they will have to expend for poles and wires for transmission, the smelter people will, of course, want to be assured that they will receive the pow er for a reasonable length of time, vlntt the time will be we are not jet. This will mean that the city will receive a monthly to the plant of $GO0 a month, or $7,200 a year, which in the course of five years would almost pay all the electric light bonds and leave the plant entirely free from debt. This added to the upwards of $G00 a month now collected in this city alone, would put the city on easy street within the next five years. Think of it! $75,000 income from one department for five years. Think indication of more! AVe can already see this city paving its walks and streets, building a city hall and making numerous much needed improvements without material cost to the citizens. But, there are other things to be considered. This plant was built for the use and benefit of the citizens of Brigham City and nothing should now be done to deprive them of those benefits. AVe are told that the city has now about 280 horse power that is available but idle. It is not used, could be without additional expense. This is at night when the greatest amount of power is being used. There are several wells being dug in and around the city that will use perhaps 100 horse power if they become successful producers of water. The committee on electric light and pow er are of the opinion that the differ ence in the power used during, the night and that used during the day-timwill be sufficient to furnish the wells. If that is the case, we would still have nearly 100 horse power to sell to any industry that might be es- Lf tablished here. In our opinion it Yj would be a good move on the part of the city to sell this power to the smelters If they can do so without making too long a contract. A contract for five years would not hamper us at all and If at the expiration of that time we saw that we needed the power at home we could use it. If all other things were favorable, a contract for even ten years would not AVe should, be a serious drawback. however, feel averse to making it for too long a time. The important thing now, as we se It, is that the citizens interest themselves in the matter to the extent that the city officials shall be fully advised as to the wisest course to follow'. ie We Get The Go-b- WE ARE PREPARED TO FURNISH CHUNK NEY ages no OUR SLOWS Come and see our Brand New Stock and get the Best Carriages and the market for the FIRST NATIONAL BANK BUILDING, r T- V No. 1. The proposition as we understand it is this: The smelter people want to buy 200 horse power and will take it from the city limits and erect their own transmision line to the point where it will be used.
