Show ' OCTOBER 19, 1921, MORNING, SfockTMarfceC Recovers From Effect of Threatened Strike Traders Take More Hopeful View of Rail Tieup Situation and Shares Under Pressure Regain Losses of Previous Day. VAUDEVlllS . NEW YORK. Oct. X. The financial community wan disponed to take a moN hopeful view of the railroad strike sit nation today. Thin was reflected In the better tone of the stock market, which Showed little of yesterday's pressure. Occasional liquidation was confined to few selected Issues among food and Silled specialties. American Sugar, common and preferred, suffered greatest depression, the latter a decline of five points pointing to dividend reduction or omission. Ralls recovered most of yesterday's and shares more or less identified with transportations improved in like degree. Exceptions were furnished by several equipments, Pullman, notably Which made a net loss of 4 points. Oils were strengthened by short covering, Royal Hutch rallying on denial that the company had sold its holdings In Mexican Eagle. Other foreign as well as domestic oils rose 1 to 2 points and motors and tobaccos responded to moderate accumulation. Rales, 642,000 shares. Monetary conditions relaxed, the opening call money rate of 6 per cent dropping to 4 per cent at midday. Freer offerings of time funds and a better inquiry for merchants paper, the latter from out of town, were reported. were confusing, Foreign exchanges Sterling losing about 2V3 cents. French, Dutch rates eased, and Italian Belgian, but marks were moderately firm, notwithstanding pessimistic advices from London regarding the German situation. In the bond market convertible rails were heavy, the entire domestic division Inclining to lower levels. Changes among Issues were trivial oa.smallas dealings. Total sales, par value, 1- -4 . Closing quotations prices this to net :were unsettled at to 1 05V4 with December $1 06 to $1.10. Corn finished and May 1103 to o lower; oats off unchanged to to and provisions unchanged to 2So down. Except for a brief time at the start, the wheat pit was nearly bare of buying orders, whereas brokers were numerous who had orders to sell. A temporary initial upturn In prices was ascribed to S disposition in some quarters to believe that the government report on farm re serves had been given too much weight as a depressing factor. This circumstance, however, was soon lost sight of, and the attention of traders focussed on the uncertainties of the threatened big railroad tieup and on talk of a possible financial crash in Oormany. Announcement from the Atlantic eeaboard that 1,040,000 bushels of United btates wheat had been purchased for Europe .faded to. bring about an important rally. Corn also touched a new low price for the aeason. The corn market, though, was relatively firm compared with wheat. Smallness of receipts together with bet ter export inquiry helped to sustain values. Oats paralleled the action of corn. Provisions went lower with hugs. e, 1- -4 l-- BANGS or TUB LEADING FUTURES.
