Much has been published recently in the leading poultry magazines regarding the relative value of pullets and older hens as winter egg producers that might lead us to believe that after a hen Is a year or more old she Is little or no better a winter egg producer than the as sage hon, tho grouse, or some other of the wild fowls in our mountains which, because of environment, lay so few eggs that they can hardly perpetuate their kind. This is not entirely true, as some of the best winter records modo by the experiment station flocks have been during tho second and third winter, while the two poorest records for this part of tho year wero made during tho first or pullet winter. If, however, the pullets aro hatched at the right time nnd are given the right kind of care they will usually lay well when the price of eggs Is blghst. It takes considerable time and expense to hatch and raise a flock of disgood pullets and we should not card them from our laying pens when v they ar only one or two years old Q- - If they will give good returns during tho second and third years. e Keeping the hens until they have finished tho third laying year instead of selling at tho end of tho second T I d. VACCINATION AGAINST SMALL POX (Frank W. LeClere) (Utah Public Health Association) It is not easy to understand the imposition of many people to vaccination against smallpox. The history of smallpox should convince any reasonable person that vaccination Is a practically certain protection against this loathsome disease. Within tho memory of persons living today smallpox was a terrible scourge, It vns more common than measles and much more fatal. Today pock marks are rarely seen in this country except among Immigrants from the backward countries where vaccination la not generally practiced. Scattered cases of smallpox occur in this country from time to time, and occasionally a small outbreak Is reported. In almost every case It Is found that the victim has never been vaccinated or that the vaccination was many ygars old or did not "take" pfoperly. In June of this casea were reportyear twenty-thre- e ed in various parts of California. Nineteen of tho vlctima had never been Vaccinated and of the remaining t j four the history of the vaccination was not known. When Bmallpox dots occur in a vaccinated person, it is usually very mild and almost never fatal. The prejudice against vaccination is partly due to serious complications. Such cases are extremely rare and are always due to carelessness and neglect to protect the vaccination against other Infections. The United States authorities have vaccinated more than three and million persons in the Philllplne Islands with not a single death or any aeriouB W.T. Eat slowly, masticate your food thoroughly, abstain from meat for a few days and In most cases the sour stomach will disappear. If It does not, take one of Chamberlain's Tablets immediately after supper. Red meats are most likely to cause sour stomach and you may find It best to cut them out.
