ATE31 Deficit of Last - Week Sue Excellent Showing of Ore , t ceeded by Increase; Loans Encountered on 925, Says an,d Deposits 'Decrease. . Report to Stockholders. ji By ALEXANDER DANA NOYES. JNBJW YORK, Dec. 4. Repeating the usual experience, by which a shortage f reiervta la one week la followed by excess In the next, today' latement of the associated bank turned tt previous weeks $4,083,000 deficit Into a surplus Of $21,081,000. This Improvement In position was helped by a fairly gge .reduction of loans and deposits, but the Addition of $20,000,000 to reserve credits at the federal bank. Was the determining Influence. Precisely, however, a the previous week's reduction In reserve balances of the private Institutions 1 strengthened the position of the reserve bank, ' so last weeks Increese of such deposit liabilities helped In bringing down that banks ratio of cash to note and deper cent to posit .liabilities from 40 37 po? dent Thls decline brought the reserve percentage to the lowest figure since Februof 1 per ary, leaving it In fact only cent above the low level of the year to date. This is not an unusual showing for the last month of the year, but It shows Clearly enough why Ills decline In ell street money rates was checked last week. The reserve bank's statement reported ' increase of $62,000 000 in rediscounts, wholly of commercial paper, and it gold reserve decreased $33,600,000. Actual gold In hand Increased some $10,000,-00- 0 as a result of the week's gold imports, but New York's credit in the system's central told fund was reduced Large drafts are evidently being made on New York by other reserve district for the approaching settlements, t Although trading on todays stock market was considerably more aetlve than on the preceding Saturday, the days changes In price was not as a whole lm-- 1 portent. The Industrial shares, which were depressed by professional traders at intervals during the week, a few substantial recoveries occurred, ranging train one to two polhts up to nine In Mexican Petroleum. All of this movement was admittedly due to the familiar .week-en- d covering of shorts; and had no particular bearing oh the larger swing of values. s Measured by the closing prices, the week, as a whole, brought a curiously confused readjustment In the stock market. Stocks which closed lower than at the beginning of the week were as numerous as the stocks which closed higher, In' general the railway shares lost ground, while the Industrials recovered, but there were exceptions enough In both groups to make it difficult to determine the actual tendency. Perhaps nothing more can be said than that the progressive general decline on the stock exchange which continued nearly up to the close of November, has been checked, and that the subsequent movement has been only the decreasing waves on the surface which are left after the stirring of the depths baa ceased. In the bond market very few advances ocourred during the last week as a whole, and there were many declines of one of three points, marking a loss of five points or mors from the best October prices Other markets ended the week In somewhat similar irregularity. . Foreign exchange went lower, the rates on London. Parle and Rome getting back to the level of the third week of November. Commodity markets again reflected the collision of opposing judgments as to price and of opposing speculative, forces. . 1 . In this mine over 40.000 tons of one have been developed in the past few months since Charles D. Kaedlng took charge as consulting engineer, that contains 4 to 10 ounce of silver per ton, with many exposures that will add materially to this tonnage. The company Is taking a very, conservative stand on ore. It has two other mines, the Argentum and Diablo, which contain a huge tonnage of ore, In stopes and scope,. fills, the three mines forming a compact group. The Argentum and Diablo were famous producers of the old days but only ore of the better grade was milled. Thf ; Lucky Hill was once owned by 'Lucky" Baldwin and Is located on the Diablo or fleaure. On account of having developed a tonnage sufficient to warrant building a mill, the company has stopped development work and la finishing the work of mapping the workings and sampling the ore.
