A. IIOGLE Main St., ALT LAKE Wasatch 77 & CO, Cedes Bldg. W OGDEN Tel. 322 A I Erosion Helps Discovery. Often a bit of a branch, or root, or even the aide of Che ancient trunk, li exposed In the gulch erosion. With thle small hit to go on, the("tree" ia steadily uncovered and the ore mined. In one of the carnotlte areas there ia a gulch about eighty feet wlda on th aide of which once were the roots end tips, respective, ly, of an enotmous tree. These roots and tips have been mined The great body of the tree, which had lain at right across the gulch, has been eroded by the stream. The miners came several hundreds nf thousands of years too late to get that "tree." Samples of camotlte ore at R. H. Officer A Co.'s laboratory show the bark structure and tha rings of growth perfectly In the replaced ore. The la Plata sandstonea hava a thickness of about 100 feet, and, so far as now known, It Is only profitable to make the search In this horlson. The sandstone Is white and easily distinguished from the red sandstones above and below It. In fact. It would seem that guides to this ore had been painted by Nature, as If to say, Look In the white sandstone beds and take the yellow and black ore There lies your fortune." Most of the ore now being mined cornea from the sandstone ledges In the gulches. The rocks are hare, easily examined, and once the evidence of a tree Is found, mining proceeds till the deposit Is worked out Exploration and development has been, and Is now, an unknown quantity among the small producers They only seek a new deposit after they have exhausted their present find art-gl- es Thorough Exploration Pays. To meet the need of an assured supply the larger companies have bought groups of -- Islms In a known field an$ hava "tested" these claims by sinking drill holes at regular Intervals. Once tlfe presence of a "tree" Is found, other drfll holes are put down close around the "Indicator" hole until the direction In which the tree fell is determined Then other holes are sunk to ascertain Its lengtB, diameter and the character and value of the ore. These test holes are thus fRy In the experience of the mining abodt 26 to 30 feet deep Oae claim yielded over 1100,000 In ore. It was bought for about $S00. This deep exploration and development work will not h attractive to the prospector It teoulres capital In abundance and a definite organization. But the careful search of the gulches for outcropa of the ore will prove Interesting and profitable The district has not been scratched vet; the search has been limited In extent of area, and done bv onTv a few prospectors who hava stopped hunting once they made a "find " Te crvlne need today In for the prospector and hla burros, with frving-pan- . grubstake and patience to hunt.
