Show FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2016 3 ‘A-peeling’ Apple deals from WSU bookstore By LEAH HIGGINBOTHAM S&T Reporter The last day students can receive a free pair of Beats 2 Solo Wireless headphones with the purchase of a Macbook or a set of the Powerbeats 2 Wireless earbuds with the purchase of an iPad Pro will be Sept. 5, according to Apple. The Apple Summer Beats promotion has been going on all summer long and has saved students the equivalent of $300 on a Macbook or $200 on an iPad Pro. It sounds like a good deal, but laptops are expensive, and campus bookstores have a bad reputation for hiking up prices. However, reputation doesn’t always equal reality. In actuality, Apple offers a student price that is only available in the bookstore for those with a W number. Bookstore tech worker Hannah VanderHoven said buying Apple tech, such as iPads or MacBooks, at the bookstore can be more cost effective for students. The Weber State University bookstore offers a cheap tech edge to its students. Add the free Beats into the equation, and students can save well over $400 on a laptop. According to Scott Rhead, WSU bookstore employee, this is the only promotion he knows of at the moment. Apple is unveiling their new products on Sept. 7, so Rhead said that the bookstore will be keeping an eye out for new deals. With more and more classes requiring online course work, having an up- to-date, light laptop is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury for students, and the bookstore has just the thing. According to both VanderHoeven and Rhead, a Macbook is the best way to go for students. Rhead said that the 13-inch, 128-GB Air or Pro is the most popular choice, and those are what he would recommend. VanderHoeven recommends the Macbook Air, remarking that the high processing By LEAH HIGGINBOTHAM S&T Reporter WHAT’S APPENING? School Idol Project Salt Lake Comic Con Welcome to What's App-ening, your weekly source for the latest and greatest in mobile apps. This week I’ve got two amazing apps I’d like to share with you. The first app is a game called Love Live: School Idol Project. If you love DDR and adorable anime girls, then you'll love Love Live. This anime-inspired tap rhythm game is as addictive as Candy Crush with all the charm of Sailor Moon. In the story, you are the manager of a group of girls working to rescue their high school from being shut down. Their plan is to form teams of School Idols, girls who sing and dance in sync, to draw more students to their school. The gameplay is simple enough — tap the notes as they hit the circular idol tiles on screen. If your rhythm is correct, you’ll get a perfect or great score for that note. The more on beat you are, the more points you earn. Alternately, if you miss a note or hit it badly, your team will lose stamina, and if your stamina bar goes empty, then the song is over and you don't get any exerience points or rewards for the performance. speed and light weight make it ideal for students who have to bring a computer with them around campus. With this deal, studying becomes easier, thanks to the addition of the noise-canceling headphones. Again, the deal ends Sept. 5, so head to the bookstore this weekend to pick up this grade-winning duo. There are four levels of difficulty for most songs and a story that you unlock the more you play. Overall, it’s a cute game with a great user interface and a charming concept. I give it 4out of 5 stars, and the only thing keeping it from five is occasional extended game maintenance and a long download time. It’s free on iPhone and An-droid, and it’s my go-to game to play on the bus to campus in the morning. Our second app will come in handy if you’re going to Comic Con this weekend. We’re already a day into the convention, but it’s not too late to download the official Salt Lake Comic Con app. The app has everything from maps of the Salt Palace to panel schedules to the locations of your favorite vendor’s booth. If you’re going to this weekend’s convention, it will save you from making frequent stops at info booths to check times and get another map that will inevitably get lost in your bags of merch. This app gets five stars in my book for making what are usually the hardest parts of conventions much simpler. If only it had a costume repair widget.
