There is a limited opportunity for youth in rural communities to complete ' a college degree. Yet, not too far down the road, in a community that is less than half the size of Moab, steps were taken to provide extensive educational offerings for young people and serve the adult population with continuing education. There was active community participation to provide higher education opportunities. A local foundation was created to help. Over the years the foundation has been able to assist students and leverage monies to assist in the construction of a campus. This foundation now provides tens of thousands of dollars to local scholarships for students to start, continue, or complete a degree in their own county. Other donors have come forward to assist in supporting higher education in their county. Ken Davey, Sue Cook, and Manuel Torres came forward with the idea of creating a foundation for Grand County to partner with higher education. These individuals believed more was needed to be done that could help young people and adults work towards the completion of degrees. They felt that a higher education presence was an essential element in the overall growth and vitality of Grand County.
