They are: Cali- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that none of the beef under the current BSE recall was distributed to retail stores in Utah. During the latest Technical Briefing with U.S. Government Officials on the BSE case, the USDA reported that approximately 80 percent of the recalled meat product was distributed in the states of Washington and Oregon. The remaining 20 percent was distributed to small retail outlets in six other states and one fornia, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii and the territory of Guam. To briefly summarize the current situation on the beef products related to the December 23, 2003 BSE recall. The beef products were distributed from Verns Moses Lake to Midway Meats on December 11. All of the central nervous system related tissue, brain, spinal cord and distal ileum, were removed at the Verns facility during the slaughter trtUM wi On i) UEtt! that occurred on December 9, 2003. Those are the tissues that are most likely to contain the BSE agent. Because the meat leaving Verns did not contain these high risk materials, the recalled beef presents an essentially zero risk to consumers. USDA-FSI(food safety is verifying service) inspection that the customers have been notified of the recalled products and know how to handle the product. FSIS has found that the products were distributed to 42 locations from Interstate Meats and Willamette Valley Meats. The vast majority of these products at least 80 percent were distributed to stores in Oregon and WashingS ton. FSIS is verifying that these 42 distributors are complying with their requirement to notify their customers. According to a report from the Sheriffs was Office, Deputy Scott Lewis was assisting the Utah Highway Patrol with traffic control on near mile marker 388, following a series of weather-relate- d accidents. Lewis, who is a K-- 9 officer, had parked his patrol car on the shoulder and was attempting to slow northbound traffic. The semi and trailer lost control and hit the vehicle in which Lewis was sitting. His dog was thrown out of the car. Box Elder News Journal 2 dozen treated for CO poisoning Bountiful, Utah The hyperbaric chamber at Lakeview Hospital proved to be a miracle machine for 24 people suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. With the big snow storm and power outage weve been treating people continually, said Dr. Tommy Love, director of hyperbaric medicine at Lakeview. Entire families from throughout Northern Utah were taken to the Bountiful hospital to make good use of the only multiple-perso- n hyperbaric chamber in the Intermountain region. Most of them were using charcoal burners and grills inside their houses to cook food. The carbon monoxide cyanide poison gets into their blood and tissues. Without oxygen therapy in a hyperbaric chamber, the CO poisons the heart and kills brain cells causing permanent damage, Love said. We are able to give them 12 times the amount of oxygen they would normally receive, he said. The increase in oxygen penetrates areas that red blood cells cannot reach, revitalizing tissues that receive poor blood flow. Gary Reid, sheriffs office public information officer. Saddle theft has been a problem in Sevier County for years with approximately 25 saddles reported stolen each year and many more that are not reported. Saddles and other tack items have become a popular form of currency in the drug trade. The possibilities of this are great, said Sevier County Sheriff Phil Barney, if we can get people to register their saddles. Richfield Reaper U.S . 6 impact analysis by spring environmental impact study concerning U.S. Highway 6 between Spanish Fork and Green River is pulling fewer comments from the public than expected, even though the matter has been publicized in numerous Utah Department of Transportation meetings. For years, UDOT officials have been doing piecemeal projects on the road to make the worst stretches safer and improve sections with the available money. But the agency recently decided to look at the road as one entity and large highway rehabilitation project. In October 2002, UDOT announced the agencys intent to prepare and issue an environmental impact statement on the entire section of U.S. 6 between Spanish Fork and Interstate 70 in Emery Price, Utah The th County. Jim Pechmann, a University of Utah seismologist, said those who felt the quakes were invited to fill out a survey form on the University of Utah Seismograph Stations Web site, www.quake.utah.edu. The first quake was at 5:39 p.m., the second a minute later and the third three minutes after the second, said Pechmann. The largest two were reported felt in Nephi and other nearby towns, he said. To date, there have been 28 reports made at the site concerning the earthquakes. The three quakes were fairly small, Pechmann said, with the first and last quakes registering at 3.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. The middle one registered 3.6 magnitude which was about half the shaking intensity of the other two. All three were in a close proximity with the epicenters which was measured at approximately seven miles southwest of Nephi and seven miles northwest of Levan, he said. Times News ' |
