The library received a grant from the Utah Humanities Council to help defray expenses to interview and record veterans, their families and their supporters as part of the Veterans' History Project, a national initiative mandated by the U.S. Congress. The Grand County Public Library joins over 225 other organizations and businesses such as the AARP and the VFW) as a partner with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Librarian Eve Tallman says, We are pleased to receive this grant. We hope our local veterans and other community members will respond to this national call to tell their stories.' In addition to conducting interviews, the library will host a celebration of our veterans and their stories on Veterans' Day in November. Copies of the interviews will be given to the interviewees and also archived locally. With permission of the veterans, the library hopes to produce radio programs highlighting the veterans' stories. There are 19 million war veterans living in the United States today, and every day we lose 1,600 of them. Motivated by the urgent need to collect the stories and experiences of war veterans while they are still among us, the United States Congress unanimously-createthe Veterans History Project. Tallman says a grant from the Utah Humanities Council is important. "The UHC is interested in funding projects in rural Utah, and this program maps, photographs, and home movies, of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them. The Veterans History Project covers World War I, World War II, and the Korean. Vietnam, and Persian Gulf wars. It includes all parmen ticipants of those wars and women, civilian and military. It documents the contributions of civilian volunteers, support staff, and war industry workers as well as the experiences of military personnel from all ranks and all branches of service. Some of the organizers think of it as the America at War Project," because while especially honoring veterans, the project also seeks to save the stories of those who fought on the homefront - the workers of the Red Cross and USD, or defense workers, or the young wife who struggled with raising the kids alone. This project will allow future generations of Americans to learn about those who have fought to sustain the freedom we so often take for granted and those who kept the home front running while they were away. It's an exciting and rather daunting project," says Chris Simon, a local folklorist who will be conducting the interviews, "because for many veterans talking about their war experiences is emotionally difficult. I hope that they will reach inside themselves and tell it like it really was. It is so important, and only right, that future generations should hear more than what the generals and historians say.
