A single bullet hole was found Wednesday, Jan. 6 shot through the southwest door to the kiosk near the entrance to the famed Slickrock mountain biking trail. The booth, and the recreation area, are not staffed during the winter months, except for regular inspections, and Grand County Sheriffs Deputies are investigating the incident as a case ofcriminal mischief. It was not clear whether the recent incident might be connected to a series of incidents last October which caused fear among the Sandflats Recreation Area Team and resulted in one employee quitting the job. The Grand County Sheriffs Office is still investigating the October incident but has not made any arrests or named any suspects, though several local persons have been interviewed. A $2,000 reward is still being offered for information regarding the October rampage. Grand County Sheriffs Detective Sergeant Curt Brewer is overseeing the investigation and said officers had responded Jan. 6 to the report from Sandflats Team leader Mike Smith. They investigated the scene of the crime and collected evidence in the form of the spent bullet. off-seas- The Moab Rotary Club selected Joel Tuhy as this years Paul Harris Fellow, an honor which includes a donation of $1,000 to the PolioPlus program honorees name. in the cant improvement in surveillance in identifying cases of po- It is recognized, however, that there still may have been as lio. many as 30,000 to 35,000 cases in 1997. As of Nov. 8, 1998, Rotary had committed more than $107 million for polio eradication in Africa, and more than $115 million for polio eradication in Asia. The World Health Organization estimates that $1 billion is needed from donors for the period 1999 to 2005 to eradicate polio. The need will peak in the period 1999 through 2000. Rotarys Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force has played a major role in the decisions by donor governments in polio-fre- e countries to contribute over $500 million for the eradication of polio in countries. Nonetheless, his isnt treating it lightly. It could be just some innocuous office kids play. But were taking it serious. Its an act of violence with a deadly weapon. Last October the booth was shot up twice resulting in 17 bullet holes, some of them grouped into a tight circle in the kiosk window at head height, leading some to interpret it as a message intended to terrorize team personnel. The shootings occurred in the midst of a series of eight other incidents scattered over a period of roughly 30 days, in which campers were disturbed by rowdy people driving through occupied campsites late at night, tossing out bottles and cursing the tourists. In response to the October rampage, the Sheriffs Department collected spent shell casings and lead, then sent the bullets to the crime lab in Salt Lake City to have tests run to determine precisely their caliber, make and, possibly, even the particular box of ammo they came out of. They also conducted a number of interviews with local residents. Any information we get we follow up on. We had some information on license plates on vehicles seen in the area. We arent ruling them out. We may go back and interview them again, said Brewer. But so far, it seems, they dont have a lot to go on. X The $2,000 reward which the BLM is offering for information on the October incident hasnt brought a single tip. Brewer said they will be sendthe bullet from the Jan. 6 inciing dent to the crime lab as well, but he didnt expect to get test results back any time soon. In fact, he has yet to see the results on the bullets sent last October. The ballistics report from the first incident hasnt come back yet. They probably get 20 to 30 cases a day up there. They prioritize it, said Brewer. Even with finger prints it can take three to four months. But, he added, the state crime lab is expanding to Price. Hopefully, that will speed things up. To date, Rotary has committed $334 million for global polio eradication, including support of operations, fund development and grants. This statistic is included in a statement of facts about the polio eradication effort issued this month by Rotarys International PolioPlus Committee. The statistics were gathered by the World Health Organization and other groups, and recently endorsed by Rotary International. By the year 2005, Rotarian contributions to the global polio eradication effort will reach approximately half a billion dollars.
