Show u ir warm npiyir-- Page B3-- - tUfre Cholesterol, glucose screenings are March 12 Utah The Southeastern District Health Department is offering a cholesterol and glucose screening on Thursday, March 12, noon to 3 p.m. at the Moab Civic Center, 450 E. 100 North. The finger stick test will give total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and glucose readings in seven minutes. No fasting is required. Cost is $12 for adults 18 to 59 years, and $6 for adults 60 and older. Free blood pressure and educational materials will be available. Risk of heart attack or stroke is influenced by obesity, male gender, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and family history of heart disease. Usually a desirable total cholesterol is 200 mgdl or below, and moderate risk is 201 to 239 mgdl, depending on other risk factors. Desirable HDL (high density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol is 35 mgdl or above. Low HDL cholesterol can represent a cardiovascular risk separate from risk associated with an elevated total cholesterol. Glucose screening will detect abnormal glucose metabolism, which, when diagnosed, may be called diabetes. The prevalence of adult onset type II diabetes may ' Auto Body 1209 S. Other risk factors are a previous abnormal glucose tolerance test, high blood pressure, significantly elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Women who have a history of gestational diabetes or delivery of infants greater than nine pounds have an increased risk of developing diabetes sometime in their g lifetime. A glucose should be less than 160. An elevated glucose test is not evidence of diabetes, but rather that the individual needs to see a health provider. By identifying people without symptoms who show abnormal glucose levels, before diabetes becomes debilitating, many complications can be prevented or forestalled.
