Show I Moab Happenings iKgxujAWi veaueamaemaoeemaamsamb 1998 January 9 rgtiiaKkg) The canyon country around the Moab area offers some of the most unique and varied landscape on earth, from 13,000 foot peaks and high alpine meadows to high desert vistas above the sandstone canyons carved by the forces of the rivers. The harshness of the area provides an unparalleled group of backcountry trails to ride on. Moab has become known worldwide as a mountain biking mecca. The combination of varied types of terrain and spectacular scenery, bring riders from all over the world to Moab to try the trails. One of the most famous and popular is the Slickrock trail. This trail is 12 miles of moderate-to-difficu- lt riding on Navajo sandstone, located only a few minutes from downtown Moab. There are many other trails and old jeep roads in the area surrounding Moab which provide a complete variety of mountain biking challenges. There are a number of companies in the area that can provide you with rentals and information. The major bicycle events for 1998 include: Tour of Canyonlands (April 17, 18 & 19), is the Utah State Championship Series opener and the largest race in the Intermountain West's Bud Lite Cannondale Cup Series. Over the past few years, this annual spring race has attracted over 700 racers. 24 Hours of Moab (October 10 & 11), is an endurance team race which is growing in popularity n with each year. These teams ride a rugged course approximately 12 miles south of Moab called the Behind the Rocks area. Produced by Granny Gear Productions, who are the event promoters for the famous 24 Hours of Canaan race in West Virginia. Last year 265 teams participated in this event sponsored by Ford Ranger. Canyonlands Fat Tire Festival (October ), This annual mountain bike event is changing its date for 1998 moving away from the traditional Halloween weekend. Look for some major changes and revitalization of its day events and trail activities.
