Show HiBEtop October 7,1999 Test shows Hill's wati r sail a. Tests on Hill's drinking water, made during calendar year 1998, show that the clear liquid is indeed safe to drink. "Hill AFB, Utah, provides a safe, clean drinking water for its personnel," the report reads. "Our commitment to excellence is reflected in this report that shows our water meets or exceeds both state and federal drinking water standards for water treatment." Tests were made for microbial contaminants, also known as coliforms; for inorganic (metals and salts); and volatile organic chemicals (pesticides, herbicides and solvents); synthetic organic chemicals (industrial solvents, paints and dyes); physical contaminants (turbidity) . The consumer confidence report, required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from every community water system, is a "report card" that discusses the quality of water provided by the system. Copies of Hill's report are available at the Base Library, Bldg. 440; the Ogden ALC Public Affairs Office, Bldg. 1102; on the Internet page http:ww.75mdg.hill.af.milPublicpageswqr98.htm; and at Bioenvironmental Engineering, Bldg. 249. Hill receives its drinking water primarily from deep wells located on the base, the report says. Well No. 1 is no longer used; wells 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9 are routinely used. Well No. 4 is used as a drinking water source during high water demand and is also used for irrigation. Well No. 5 is used for fire suppression and irrigation (secondary water source). Wells No. 4 and 5 have a history of high iron and manganese content. Well No. 7 is scheduled for When demand increases during the summer, primary and secondary water is purchased from the g. Chiefs reading list recommends books Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. Weber Basin gets its primary water from deep wells and the Weber River. Secondary water comes from the Weber River. Hill AFB serves a population of 22,082. Drinking water sources tap and bottled include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells, the report says. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves and naturally occurring minerals can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of cer- WASHINGTON (AFPN) The Air Force chief of staff's Reading Program, which began in 1997, is designed to promote personal professional development for all Air Force members, civilian and military. The program aims to instill both a deeper sense of pride in the service's rich heritage and a stronger understanding of each member's role in meeting U.S. security objectives. Each quarter, one of the books from the CSAF's Reading list will be featured. Airmen of all ranks and grades and civilians are encouraged to read the featured title, which is available at all Air Force libraries. This quarter's featured book is "A Few Great Captains" by DeWitt Copp. Its title was taken from a quote by Gen. George C. Marshall, who said, "No Army produces more than a few great captains." The book chronicles the foundation of the Air Force and its struggle for independence. It tells the story from the perspective of those airmen who were in the thick of the Billy Mitchell, Benny Foulois, Frank struggle Andrews, Hap Arnold, Carl Spaatz and Ira Eaker. A primary reason for including this book on the CSAF's Reading List is its insight into the personalities, political fights, aerial feats, assignments and family lives of those who have now become legendary airmen. These and pioneers pushed the envelope, and Copp shares many biographical anecdotes of their careers. The book is an excellent starting point for understanding the rich heritage of the Air Force, and it provides a great foundation fox all Air Force members: officer, enlisted and civilian. Food and Drug Administration regula- tions establish limits for bottled water that must provide the same protection for public health. The drinking water might contain small amounts of some contaminants, the report says, though the contaminants don't necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general popud lation. persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These .people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
