Show iR HiSStopZ' May 6, 1999 I s indoor racs i,Si DlSaiHlS 7 by Steven R. Ford Hilltop Times staff The Westside Fitness Center got a good turnout on Saturday morning for their Indoor Biathlon, the first event to kick off May Fitness Month. Because the event was held indoors, participants were required to run 3 miles on the treadmills and pedal 5 miles on the stationary bikes. MSgt. Bill Ricks of the 367th Training Support Squadron battled back on the biking portion to claim the best time of the day at 31:45. Ricks, who said he wasn't worried about overcoming the lead of fellow competitor SSgt. Mike McGrath, has been involved in many biathlon and triathlon competitions and understands the need for good pacing. "I like to do multi-spoevents," Ricks said. "It's a challenge. Today I used my experience in racing. I knew there was one guy going a little faster than me in the running, but I also knew that you have to pace yourself. "My goal was to not give up too much on the run and conserve myself a little. The key is balance and knowing what limits you can push in each event." Second place went to McGrath of the 34th Fighter run. McGrath, who finished with a time of 33:33, went out fast on the treadmill portion and looked to be running away with the competition, but he fell a little off the pace on the bikes and slipped to sec- ond. "I was happy with the performance," McGrath said. "I knew I wasn't that great of a biker, so my best chance was to go out fast on the run and hope for the best on the bike. "It was fun, definitely different. It took some time to get used to the machines." In the women's division, Nancy Sanders finished first with a time of 50:43. Sanders, a military dependent, said that she was curious about the event and, having never competed in anything of it's kind before, decided to try it. Sr -i ; fi . !' '') yw. .
