National Honor Society held their first meeting on Wednesday, October 19th, to elect officers for 94-9They also reviewed expectations for all the new members. The new President of Honor is Society Melissa Jacobson, the is Christopher Kauffman, and the Secretary is Melissa Bailey. All members of National Honor Society are selected for high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Leadership is based on the student's participation in community 5. Vice-Preside- nt 94 Number 3 jrt Drastic Change Greets Attendance Policy Students this quarter are facing tougher rules on attendance, lunch detention, and truancies. A new policy was drafted by the discipline committee during the first quarter and was unveiled on Thursday, October 22. Each teacher at the high school read the policy to their classes in an effort to inform everyone before the new quarter began. The policy reads as follows: If a student misses a class or a day of school without an excuse, they are considered truant. 1st Truancy: 1 day in school suspension (ISS) Athletic Banquet On 2nd Truancy: 3 days out of school suspension (OSS) 3rd Truancy: 3 to 10 days OSS plus juvenile court referral 4th Truancy: Juvenile court referral and discipline committee action After each out of school suspension, a parent will have to check students back into school in person. The tardy policy remains the same, however, students who skip lunch detention will now be considered truant. After having been bom only a year ago, there are over 40 people involved and it's still expanding. People with ages ranging from eight at our youngest to an older crowd of adults are involved in this .V V a1 fer K H 4 5. growing program. Over the next several weeks, there is a high school tournament in which all students are invited to participate. No entrance fee is required for U.S. Chess Members. To become a member, a $7.00 fee is required. A member begins to receive a nationally respected rating and a chess publication. There is also a weekly club meeting every Thursday at the Center Court Sports Bar and Restaurant. The season is starting off with a big bang, and plenty of students at Grand County High are participating in basketball, wrestling, drill and cheer. "Im looking forward to a great year," says Ronald Dolphin who is coaching the wrestling team this year. "Anybody that wants to come out is more than welcome-ther- e are no try outs", states Coach Dolphin. Troy Peterson, an English teacher at the High School and Eddie Guererro, who also helped coach last year, will be Assistant coaches. With a busy schedule this year, they are looking forward to seeing all of your faces at this years games. Because of Boys and Girls basketball both needing to practice in the Gym, there will be a gym schedule up for the students around the school that notifies the times of the practices. These candidates will be competing at White Horse the 18th of April. They will be interviewed and judged on their portfolios. The -- -- -- judges will assign each scholar a rating from 0 to 50 on Scholarship and from 0 to 25 each in Leadership and Citizenship. The winners at regional will receive full tuition to any college in Utah for one year and $300. The runners up in each category will receive half tuition and $150.
