Two proposals for increasing the tax levy of the Moab Mosquito Abatement District have been presented by the control board, but a decision is not expected until the proposed budget for 1992 has been adopted. The board last Fuday submitted a proposed budget of 48,878 to the Grand County clerk to make available foV review before a public hearing Dec. 9. The budget represents about a 10 percent decrease from last j car's budget of $54,000. However, the board anticipates being able so work with an estimated $5S,000 in revenues that raising the tax levy to the maximum would jicld. Board member Joe Eaton said the budget proposal assumes ail increase in the tax levy to the maximum .0004. "Maria will be shown on Wednesday, the 20th and if she places she will compete in the finals on Friday the 22nd for the World Championship title. Susie has also received a letter of verification from the AQHA that "Maria has completed her Open AQHA Championship and is nearing her AQHA Superior Halter Award. Among many other recognitions and awards, "Maria" was the NQHA All Around Horse, the 1991 UQHA Heading Champion and is currently listed third in the nation for all around points. The biggest budget item in the 1992 proposal is $25,168 for salaries, including $6,000 for another fulltime temporary assistant to district manager and pesticide applicator Jolene Welch. Welch says more manpower is needed because she needs more time in the office doing paperwork required by the state. Additional staff is also justified by a growing emphasis on controlling mosquitoes at die source, which requires more time and effort than fogging adult mosquitoes from a truck, she said. The sw itch to source control was accelerated last summer by persistent complaints from an active segment of the community that objects to fogging with malathion. Emphasis on source control has also been recommended by the state. Budget items and the proposed levy increase were discussed at A workshop last Wednesday, and the proposed budget was approved Thursday in a meeting the board planned the night before.
