Redd Foundation of La Sal, and Four Corners School of Outdoor Educa- tion of Monticello, two school groups learned about environmental ethics recently. The participating students were from Foothills Academy in Denver, Colo., and Le Jardin Academy in Kailua, Hawaii. Several San Juan County students also participated in the group. Four Corners School Director Janet Ross and Hardy Redd conceived of this idea as a way to begin a dialogue between opposing sides on the issue of land use and also as a way for merging adults to form an environmental ethic themselves. The course was held for three days at La Sal Livestock Co.'s ranch in La Sal, where the students heard points of view from local land users on subjects such as logging, uranium mining, ranching, farming, and waste disposal. They gave much information on the need for resource use and the historical perspective of land users in the area. The next three days of the course were conducted on the San Juan River. Ideas were discussed such as the value of land for recreation, biological preserves, and spiritual development. Information was given on Native American uses and harmony with the land, pressures from metropolitan areas for recreation ar- - centers that natural over-us- e Au-- " 5, PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Board of County Commissioners of Grand County, State of Utah, will hold a Public Hearing September 16, 1991 at 10:15 a.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Grand County Courthouse on the 1991 amended budget for the Grand County Travel Council. Via guest speakers, group debates and journal writing, the students were asked to apply this information own to solutions for their communities and families. While there was much debate and difference of opinion, all participants came away from this educational experience feeling that each side had been given a chance to give their point of view and that they had been heard. In the future, as these students become the leaders of tomorrow they will have more information on which to base their decisions about this earth, its uses and ways to preserve it, organizers said. A quote from one of the participants was: "Today definitely provides me with a lot of information, some experiences really helped strengthen my viewpoints . . . When I saw dead sagebrush, I understood the power man uses over nature, only to satisfy his immediate needs . . . The uranium mine helped me to realize that many people are taking precautions to help the environment. I found that although man does have an extreme amount of power, some people are sincerely concerned for the environment, and will take extra steps to save it." PARENTS MEETING 1991.
