Show C4The Thursday, March 1, 1990 TSmes-Independe- Concerned citizens met here to discuss youth at risk The Grand County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse met and organized on February 13, 1990. Representatives from county and city government, law enforcement. Grand County School District, Social Ser- vices, Highland Ridge Hospital, Four Comers Mental Health, AA and Moab community assembled to develop goals to strive toward regarding drug and alcohol intervention for the youth in need in Grand County. The major purpose of the meeting was to discover what services currently exist in the county, what we want, and goal set based on the needs that they have. The members of the group concurred that there is a large need for drug and alcohol intervention for youth in the community under the age of 18. BECOME A HOST It was agreed that help for youth is needed beyond what the community in the their families do not and community have the money to pay for quality intervention type treatment at a now provides. Youth credible rehabilitation facility. Services that exist in Grand County are: Counseling, early intervention programs, out patient and referral system for drug abuse, and educational programs at Four Corners Mental Health, Alcoholic Anonymous, Aftercare (group program through Highland Ridge Hospital, school district education programs and peer helpers, Youth programs at Red Rock, Middle School and HMK and the high school. Several goals were established as a result of this meeting. They are: 1. Work on funding for future programs for a detoxification center, helpline, ther-ap- At-Ri- sk and educational programs oriented for youth under 18 years old. 2. Organize Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous grams for youth. 3. Work with Grand County School District in developing counseling programs and hiring of counselors in the district. 4. Continue to meet until the community goals are met. The meeting was satisfying to all concerned because they agreed problems exist in the community and all agreed to do something about it. If anyone is interested in more details regarding the outcome of the session or want to indicate interest in working with them the help the youth in need, contact Tom Martin, high school principal or Dixie Dalton. To celebrate this day, the Democratic Party will sponsor an essay and poster contest in the schools. Six prizes will be given to high school, elementary and middle schools. Andrew Riley will chair this contest with assistance from Joan Gough and Allison Bendey. Party caucuses will be held April 30 state wide with an election of District officers and county delegates for the next two years. These caucuses were formerly known as mass meedngs, and are open to everyone interested in the Democratic process of election at the "grass roots level.
