Taylor Publishers and Editors Assistant to the Publisher Circulation Director Production Foreman EDITORIAL I had the interesting experience of following my wife around a big city last week. The occasion was our attendance at the national Governmental Affairs Conference of the National long-soug- ht facility. As we move Into this new phase of activity, it may be valuable to step back to put where were going in perspective with where weve been. The senior center concept began many years ago when the county commission formally turned the old hospital building over to the senior citizens for their activities. Six years ago the need for more useable space began to be felt in that building. The first thought was to see about knocking out some walls, and remodeling entrances for handicapped accessability. Because of the location of weight- - bearing walls, and the condition of the plumbing, wiring, etc., that option was soon discarded. A group of local people including some from the Council on Aging then did some touring around the state looking at facilities which have been built elsewhere. That resulted in several sets of blueprints for buildings, but the cost projected seemed to be more than we could afford. An idea then emerged to study the possibility of building space for senior citizens in conjunction with office space for state government entities, which saw the benefit of being housed together. Vocal opposition to that concept arose immediately, despite benefits which could be seen, and the idea was quickly scrapped for political and cost reasons. That was going on four years ago now. But the Womens Literary Club, the moving force behind the senior center idea all along, and a group calling itself the Council for Senior Citizens Building Fund, refused to let go. Casting about in new directions, the group considered an offer from the Board of Education to build a facility on land which was available at Helen M. Knight Elementary School. And while the land was free, the fact that it could o never be deeded to the county, and the old of construction costs resulted in abandonment of this option. A year ago, the thought of purchasing the American Legion Hall and remodeling it developed. The idea did not enjoy Immediate popularity, as the building was characterized in the minds of many as that drafty old bam, and both location and access were perceived as problems. Meetings with members of American Legion Post 54, an open house, and talk, talk, talk ensued. It was finally agreed that the Post would sell its building for $25,000, in return for a guarantee of its own meeting and storage space in the building. The task of drawing up sales contracts acceptable both to the Legion members and the County Commission seemed to drag on interminably, but it was finally completed and signed. Getting from the point where we were six years this point has been about as fast as a foot race to ago through a sea of mud, but we have finally arrived at this new point of beginning. It is to be hoped that the sea of mud will harden somewhat with the coming of spring, and we will be able to move ahead on this project with prudent haste. bug-a-bo- things. And it didnt take long for me to prove to myself the old adage: you can take the boy out of the country, but you cant take the country out of the boy. Feeling a need to satisfy my occasional need for a smoke, I managed to find an ash tray on a high buffet table in the main hall of the presidential mansion. I nervously edged over to it, and as I began attempting to light my cigarette, I noted a uniformed Marine captain eyeing me suspiciously. As he continued to stare at me, I continued to attempt to get my smoke going. I couldnt figure out what in the devil he was bothered about until I glanced down and realized I was trying to light my Merit Light with my Vicks inhaler.
