Amax Coal, a Denver based company, has had a preference lease application on coal located in Wildcat, Swap Mesa and Cave Flat, since 1976. They want to mine 2 million ton a year from Wildcat, 1 million ton from Swap, and 1 million ton from Cave Flat. Swap and Cave are tentatively considered by the BLM . as unsuitable in their draft study because it is habitat for wildlife species. Helmutt Doelling, UGMS, stated that the major coal deposits are in the Trantula Mesa and not in the Amax Coal Lease applications. Amax is not the only party involved in the coal leasing. Mountain Basin, a structural basin 48 miles long and 18 miles wide. It is estimated that the area underlined by coal is 450 sq. miles. There is an estimated 890 million ton of coal.
