Show B2 The Times-IndeDenden- Thursday, July 30, 1981 t, Hanksville News Notes i i i by Barbara Ekker r J Stanley Adams from the WHO IS THIS REVEREND YODER? by Gil Yoder From time to time and from different sources I am sometimes addressed as "Reverend Yoder. This title has been seen on envelopes and heard in conversations. The question I would like to ask is this: Who is this Reverend Yoder? Certainly I know who I am, but what means this title, Reverend? It must be a Biblical term, so to my study. Sure enough, there it is in Psalm 111:9, which is the only place it is found in the scriptures. And to the chagrin of those who use the term for a preacher, in the Bible it is used of God; not of a preacher. Just what does the term mean? It means worthy to be revered; entitled to reverence. When Peter received such reverence, he refused it, because he was only a man (Acts 10:25-26What preacher is there among us today, who is more than a man? Jesus condemns all such religious titles of honor in Matthew chapter 23. He condemns the title Rabbi (Hebrew for teacher); certainly this would condemn a title of Doctor of Divinities" (v. ' 8). And in no uncertain terms he condemns the religious use of the term Father (v.9), even though many are wont to use the term regardless. We plead with all men and women to honor God by using these terms for God only, seeing that ). only He deserves such praise. And, please, call me Reverend.
