Making some basic decisions which will have consequences is no easy task, the Community Council for Senior Citizens Building Fund is learning. Since the sale of the old senior citizens center property on West Center Street, the group has been wrestling with the various options which might be open in providing another seniorcom-munit- y center here. A building subcommittee has been meeting with Bill Snow of J. & S. Construction, and with Ray Taylor of Canyonlands Designs looking over some very preliminary building plans, and comparing them with the pot of gold currently available to do the project. Its frustrating, but I think were beginning to get somewhere. Weve talked all the way from basic metal plain jane to the intriguing concept of adobe. The final product, of course, will be dependant on costs, bids and community support. What were shooting for is a building which is a minimum of 7,000 square feet including a hall which could seat 300 people, a kit- -' chen to house equipment currently in storage (and e which would cost $30,000 or more if we had to and it today), crafts areas for quilting, ceramics, etc. Roughly, the budget currently looks like this: there will be the $120,000 from the building and property; $4,000 currently in the Moab City budget; $1,500 from the Lions Club Basketball Tournament; $10,000 or more currently in the bank from projects sponsored by the Literary Club, memorials and other donations; and several thousand dollars in the Area Agency on Aging budget which could be used on the building: a total of about $131,500. Were hoping to raise a substantial sum from local business, industry and private donations, but where to realistically peg that total is a real question. Weve discussed the concept of raising a building in the old Western tradition of barn raising,' with community people coming to help with the labor. Its a great idea, and would sure keep construction costs down, but maybe not very realistic in todays world, when everyone seems to have so many other pressing commitments. The property owners adjacent to the plot of land in the northeast corner of Helen M. Knight school which is the most likely construction site have been polled, and reaction was mainly positive to putting the budding there, contingent on the looks of the structure, availability of parking, etc. ' However, another possibility was brought up f ,'S recently, and that is purchase of the American Legion Hall and property. The building there is only f ta 4,000 square feet, and questions have been raised as to its suitability. Members of the committee will look at it, though, before ruling it out as an option. Looking back over all this discussion, I begin to wonder how much further we are along that we were two years ago. But thinking back, we are. We have three county commissioners who are firmly behind the project and are attending meetings on it regularly. We have a core of enthusiastic people willing to do whatever is necessary to further the project. And we have some money to work with. Hopefully, a year from now, with the support of this community, we will have a building.
