One airman, Jay Stewart Schatte, was killed in the crash, which .occurred six miles north of , Monticello on July 18. Times-lndepende- cor- nt respondent Barbara Ekker of Hanksville reported that during the week of July 7, three helicopters landed at the Hanksville airport. She spoke with Major Don Y. Thompson, who stated that the choppers were on a "routine training mission," and one had experienced blade problems. Ekker stated that the Major allowed no photos to be taken and refused interviews with members of the crews, estimated by Ekker at 30 men per craft. Two of the helicopters took off at about 1:30 p.m. to bring replacement parts to the damaged helicopter from Hill Air Force Base, Ekker reported.
