To help keep motorists safe this holiday season, which begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, and ends at midnight Sunday, Nov. 26th, the Utah Safety Council urges drivers to start thinking about winter weather and road conditions that can change rapidly for the worse. It is a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car at all times. An ideal kit contains a flashlight, blanket, warning flares or reflectors; a scraper with brush on one end, a tow chain, jumper cables, a shovel, a bag of sand, a candle and matches. A thorough checkup for your car can help you avoid disaster. The brakes, battery, exhaust system, headlights, fluids, tires, wipers and cooling system should be checked by a qualified mechanic. Brush all snow off your windshield, windows, mirrors, roof, hood and trunk lid before each trip so your vision will not be blocked. Tail-ligh- ts and headlights should also be brushed off so other motorists can The traditional Christmas lights on historic Temple Square will be turned on at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 24, and will remain on every evening through January 1. A 5:30 p.m. ceremony in the Tabernacle will precede the actual turning on of the quarter-millio- n tiny lights strung through the trees and shrubs and along the buildings and walkways of the Square. Elder L. Tom Perry of the Council of Twelve Apostles, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, will deliver a Christmas message during the ceremony and then will close the switch to activate the lighting display. The ceremony will also feature Christmas music by the Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus, under the direction of Robert C. Bowden. Under the supervision of Peter Lassig, Church landscape architect and grounds service manager, a crew of seven has been stringing lights since early October. "Our job isn't finished until the lights go on," said Hellmut Bork, who, with Ty Nielsen, assist Lassig with the annual project. "Pink and red lights will be the predominant colors again this year," Nielsen said, "but white, amber, orange, green and blue lights are also used." It takes three to four hours to tightly wrap the lights around a single crab apple tree, Bork said, adding that "there are 52 of them on the Square." The tight wrap, he said, assures that the lights will hold up and under the weight of snow-ic- e will maintain the desired design. The Cedar of Lebanon tree near the temple represents the greatest challenge for the workers, Nielsen said. "It took four days to put the lights in that tree," he said. Some 30,000 visitors visited the Square on the first night of the lighting display last year and about 500,000 came during the entire Christmas season. Meanwhile, the annual Christmas concert of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is planned for Friday and Sat MOVIE: to drive straight through to your destination. Drowsiness endangers the passengers in your car as well as , everyone else on the road. Do not drink and drive. In Utah, a little over one third of all motor-vehicle fatalities involve a drinking driver. Maintain an adequate following distance between you and the vehicle ahead. This is particularly important considering possible adverse weather conditions. "ARRIVE ALIVE" for the holidays. m prevent skidding, minimizing gear shifts and acceleration, and brake gently. If you car does begin to skid, turn in the direction of the skid. As is the case with all other highly congested holiday periods, the Council offers the following tips.
