At Grand County Middle School, Representative Adams spoke to the students about their responsibilities as students and the importance of .productive work. He then presented first place awards to eighth grade fstudent Jennifer Jackson, who made a "Wonder Collar" that keeps a dog fleash handy at all times, to seventh grade student Brad Swanson for his Shorten-Los- s Shortening Pump, and to sixth grade student Angela Hobbs for "Snug Sheets." the j At Red Rock Elementary, - winners included kindergarten student Sarah Groff for "A Stove," first grade student Lindsay Snyder, who invented a "Picks 'M' JJp Pin Broom," and second grade tudent Jenny Wilson, who made an Automatic Rabbit Feeder." The fifth grade invention was a winning "Magnificent Mutt Protector," designed by Kirby Sorensen. Representative Adams Also presented honorable mention awards to ijiree students in each class who had jtie next best inventions. The first place winner in each Jrade will receive a $50 savings jiond and their inventions will be nt to the National INVENT RICA contest headquarters at "No-Was- Softball the United States Patent Model Fbundation in Washington, D.Cr for state and regional judging. In addition to speaking to the students at the assemblies and presenting the awards, Mr. Adams visited classrooms at Red Rock and noted the crowded conditions there. He was also impressed with the quality of the education children were participating in. Open House was held at both schools on Monday and Tuesday so that parents and Mends could view the inventions. An impressive dis- play in Room 14 at Red Reck included 198 inventions. Teachers Kathy McNeely and Paula Radcliffe coordinated the contest there and prepared the display with the help of PTA volunteers. At Grand County Middle School, 36 students participated with the help of Bemie Radcliffe and Aleene Nielson. Eighteen volunteer judges spent form one to two hours each on Friday, March 18, judging the entries for originality, usefulness, quality of illustration, and clarity of written descriptions. Gwyn Parriott, of RSVP, recruited most of the judges who included Oib and Irene Wiggle, Lloyd Parriott, Leona Threadgill, Hannah Pittman, Eddah Shields, Betty Baker, Lola Nichols, Winifred Minor, and Kay Hutchins. Other judges included Lloyd Hilton, Pete Parry, Vivian Arthur, Evert John Fogg, Marv Clever, Rick Fullman, and Gary Jacobsen. Many Moab businesses and individuals contributed prizes or money for winning students. With their help and the volunteer assistance of many of Moab's citizens, the contest was a great success. Over the years Green River's Co-E- d tourney has grown to where it now draws teams from throughout Utah and the Grand Junction area to compete for prizes worth over $1,000.
