In 1984, Alaska 8 crude birth rate was 24.7 while Utahs was 23.6 births per 1,000 per 1,000 populations, according to a report by the Utah Department of Health. This is four times the rate of decline that is occurring nationally where fertility rate was 65.7 in 1985 compared to 68.4 in 1980. In the 16 years between 1979 and 1985, the number of women 30 years of age and older having a first birth was increased by 400 percent. The proportion of first births to women 30 years of age and older has doubled to 9.5 percent in 1985 from 4.8 percent in 1979. One of the obvious effects of the declining fertility rate is slower growth of the Utah population, Brockert said. The greatest impact will occur with the schools having smaller' enrollments than in recent years. Smaller families will likely result in greater demand for smaller homes.
