In reading what John has written, I find it presumptuous to try to improve on his message. AIT Dear Adrien and Sam, I have been trying to write to you about what to say and I just cannot find words good enough to really tell all of you dear friends how I deeply appreciate all that you dear friends did to make Jean and my life so much easier to continue, as though probably you know Jean went with the Lord Jan. 20th. I want everyone to know how I truly appreciate all well-state- By Sam Taylor Moab Chamber of Commerce under the leadership of officers, newly-installe- president, John d Fogg, are taking a hard look at the role of that organization in the future scheme of things in the community. Its probably a pretty good idea, in the light of the organization and staffing of the new Central Service Office, which handles administrative responsibilities for a number of d promotional-orientegroups in the the Chamber.. including community, The C of C, though, plays an k important part in the in Moab, and should goings-o- n continue to be supported by the business community, as well as local government agencies. week-to-wee- Sure, a lot of functions once performed by the Chamber have since been taken over by other organizations. The annual Jeep Safari is a good case in point. But thats as it should be. The Chambers role is to come up with the ideas, initiate the programs, get them moving, and if they grow to a point where they can stand on their own feet, then they should. The Chamber, then, can go on to other matters. Another important function of the Chamber is to give its membership-duri- ng the regular Tuesday luncheon meetings held all year an opportunity to share ideas, frustrations, and opinions with other members of the community. That function, in and of itself, is almost justification for continuing a strong Chamber of Commerce. Frankly, I like the way a somewhat chaotic array of different organizations have fallen into place with the organization of the Central Services Office. Roles should be easily clarified now, and thats important as we begin to once again involve in that always difficult job of bootstrapping ourselves back toward better times. The Chamber as well as other organizations needs your support. We hope that their coming membership drive will result in success, providing officers the resources needed to conduct a vigorous job of work for their members in 1985. sjt It may still be a little cold in Moab, but the days are sure starting to look pretty. It was hard for me to believe Wednesday morning, as I looked out at the blue Moab sky, that Salt Lake City had visibility due to valley fog. My friend, Clem from Lower-eas- t Panguitch who now winters in St. George summed it up pretty well the other day. You only have to be in Salt Lake Valley a couple of days in January and February before you get to thinking the whole world is this miserable, he said. sjt Now that the Bureau of Land Management has gone through the lengthy and proper steps leading to the award or rejection of a permit, and has agreed to allow Conoco, Inc. to drill near Parriott Mesa adjacent to Castle Valley, I hope the terrible civic-orient- ed near-zer- m e, I Stye imefi-3tti)epend- eni play exclusion of the and people industries that were here before any of the parks were here. No reasonable person can say that Tourism will provide a living for all who wants it here, we cant pick up and go when the season ends. We dont want to. Mr. Salamacha s lofty ideals cannot and will not work as long as people can still have the desire to live and work where they want. We permanent residents, burdened as we may fie, need people like Con. Nielson to fight for our rights. We have an over abundance of tourists, tree ' and others telling us to keep this area nice for them to visit. No one seems to give a damn for us. Come enjoy the parks and area, enjoy the rivers and scenery, but dont tell us how we should live or earn our living. Dont tell us whats best for us. Let us have the.right to of our own future. The Southeastern Utahns want to keep our present industries and attract new industries so we can live here and also enjoy the land. This area is not a Disneyland, People live here. The Thank You, Kurt Balling It was learned this week that eastern parties interested in the Valley City Reservoir Project would start work within a few weeks. ' The ice had practically all gone from the Grand River. School was reopened and was running normally following a closure due to the diptheria epidemic. Heavy rains had fallen in the valley much of the week, assuring good range conditions during the spring and summer months. 60 Years Ago The Midwest Exploration company was organized to carry on development work on the oil structures down the Colorado River from Moab. Vernal The outcome of a court case by the Ute Indian Tribe which went before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals two weeks ago hinges on the answer to one questionwere the reservation boundaries diminished when they were opened to settlement? The-appeal of the case was granted after the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in : favor of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in a similar case in South Dakota. The Ute Tribe is seeking jurisdiction, particularly in civil matters, over lands within the original boundaries of the Uintah and Uncompahgre reservations before they were opened to settlement by legislation. In 1894, the Uncompahgre and in 1902 the Uintah Reser- vations were approved for settlement, but it was not until 1905 that 0 the settlement by whites actually began. Defendants, Duchesne County, Uintah County and the State of Utah, contend that it was ; the intent of the legislation that the reservation be diminished. It has been my pleasure this week to again extend my support in behalf of the Red Rocks Neighborhood of the Utah Girl Scout Council as a Neighborhood Volunteer. This I did by signing a quantity of letters asking for donations in support of the local program. Im an old girl scout myself (dont take that too literally but, truthfully, I do still have the girl scout pin of my girlhood), and I believe I am just beginning to fully appreciate the long-terbenefits of the lessons of scouting. As a young wife, I enjoyed being a girl scout leader for all levels from Brownies to Seniors. I was a Den Mother also, but emphasis today is going to the girls. Actually, I probably learned more from being a leader than I ever did from being a scout, but thats all part of the program. I share this simply to give a pat to a worthwhile cause, and to urge both those who receive the letter and those who do not to donate as generously as possible.
