McKINNEY ' Evangelical Free Church One of the things that wise people learn is to never say never. jThink for a moment of the things that have gone out of fashion that you cannot conceive of eer returning to fashion. You know, though, that the moment you say something like "The leisure suit will never come back," you can be sure that some designer somewhere is plotting its return. After all, who could have foreseen the return of bellbottoms and sideburns? Who would have predicted a Monkees reunion tour, or Congressman Sonny Bono? What about John Travolta ing a hot property in Hollywood? What about Jane Austen? Jane has been out of fashion, not for decades, but for more than a century. In recent years, she has become a cultural phenomenon. I recently watched all six hours of the PBS version of "Pride and Prejudice" and loved it. "Emma" and "Sense and Sensibility" have been in the theaters recently, and done quite well. Why is it that an writer like early Jane Austen has become popular after being ignored for so long? There are probably a lot of reasons, but the main one that I have come to is passion. Even though her heroes and heroines are careful about letting their feelings be known, they are capable of real emotion. Austen wrote in a time when there was restraint. In a historic meeting in Ligo-nie- r. Pa., in 1994, bishops from 10 Orthodox denominations, including Spyridon's predecessor. Archbishop Iavakos, signed a declaration signaling their support of a single Orthodox jurisdiction in North America. That created reverberations in the mother churches of some of the denominations, where concerns were expressed about the independence of churches in the United States. When Iavakos turned 85, he was asked to submit his resignation. Almost immediately, the church in North and South America was divided into four separate jurisdictions, with Spyridon being selected to lead the church in the United States. Patriarch Ecumenical Bartholomew of Constantinople called on Spyridon to show "unlimited devotion and blind loyalty and lifelong gratitude" to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. And unity is important to Spyridon. In an interview, he said his criteria for filling two vacant bishoprics in the United States in Atlanta and Detroit will be to select people who can keep "a certain unity of ministries." However, he also has made clear his commitment to Orthodox unity in America. Even when the churches have reached the point of creating a . single jurisdiction, he said "every group of a certain ethnic origin . should have their own ecclesiastical authorities."
