Baldwin, a member of the U.S. Geological Survey, was working on the first topographic map of north central Arizona in an area designated "Echo Cliffs. Near a dry water hole he noticed what appeared to be an inscription scratched on a nearby flat rock ledge. "I could make out the distinct date 1776," Baldwin recollected in later years. Two Spanish names were also carved in the soft sandstone. "The date indicated to me at the time that it must have been made by one of the early explorers and this date attracted my attention as being the same as that of American independence." Baldwin recorded in his field notebook finding the inscription and mentioned it to A H. Thompson, the geographer in charge. Baldwin then "promptly forgot about the record" until he read an about two AprO 17, 19 irirddl hls8iry By HAROLD SCHINDLER The Sad Lake Tnbune article Itak, Wteesdv, Franciscan priests. About 18 inches to the right of the inscription Melgaard found an incised Spanish cross. He estimated it was 8 inches high with a crossbar about 4 inches wide. Thomas E. (AP) Another Yellowstone National Park wolf has reportedly been found dead by a park biologists on a routine monitoring flight. The female wolf was seen dead south of Old Faithful during a monitoring flight on Sunday afternoon, according to Yellowstone p'ark officials. Officials are still investigating the cause of death. The wolf, which belonged to the Lone Star pack, was released from its acclimation pen near Old Faithful on April 5. The wolves w ere brought from Canada as part of a federal project to reintroduce the endangered species into America's northern Rockies. The female wolf was spotted on Saturday with a male wolf and seemed to be in good condition, park officials reported. Then on Sunday, the biologists received a signal from the wolf's radio collar indicating that it was dead. Later, the officials saw the wolfs carcass from a monitoring airplai. The wolf was the sixth Yellowstone wolf to have died since an initial 14 wolves were freed in the park early last year. One of those wolves had eight pups and another female wolf had one pup. Another 17 wolves were released into the park this year. Subtracting the six wolves that have died, officials said there are 34 Yellowstone wolves remaining.
