(AP) eye already turned toward a fall showdown with President Clinton, Bob Dole is appealing for a seven-stat- e "Super Tuesday" primary sweep that would put him well past the halfway mark in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Anticipating a strong Dole showing, rival Pat Buchanan acknowledged today that, "We may have a rough day Tuesday." As Dole sought another big primary day, Buchanan and Steve Forbes battled on. But they talked increasingly of influencing the GOP agenda and less of the likelihood of blocking Dole from the nomination. "We're going forward because I represent a cause and the people who are behind me want me to represent that cause in the Republican convention. ..." Buchanan said this morning. "We're going to San Diego to do battle for the things we believe in," he said. "This election is not just about picking a candidate to run in a single election," Forbes said Sunday. "This election is about the direction that America takes." One of his top supporters, former Housing Secretary Jack Kemp, even talked of opening a dialogue with the Dole campaign, although Forbes CHICAGO (AP) Instant or espresso, coffee seems to ward off ark thoughts of suicide in omen, a study says. Dole spent the night in Dania, just outside Fort Lauderdale, and was making a final campaign pitch in Florida today before returning to Texas for an primary-ev- e rally on San Antonio's Riverwalk. Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Oregon also have "Super Tuesday" contests. Buchanan was focusing on Oklahoma in the final day, and targeting Christian conservative vot a mathematical lock on the nomination that day. Looking ahead to that, Dole now focuses his speeches more and more on Clinton, urging voters to remember that the incumbent Democrat promised in 1992 to balance the budget, cut taxes and reform welfare but has since vetoed Republican proposals to do those things. ' I'll promise you one thing, if I'm the nominee I'm going to beat Bill Clinton in November of Dole told several hundred enthusiastic supporters at a Sunday afternoon rallv in Jacksonville, ers with his vow to defend the GOP's platform plank. "There is no way to compromise on whether the unborn child is a human being and has a right to life," Buchanan said in a weekend interview. On Sunday, in remarks at Houston's Bread of Life Church, Buchanan called for a "more muscular Christianity" to help in his fight to outlaw abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide, and to restore prayer and Bible study in public schools. Forbes, too, was focusing on his centerpiece issue: the flat tax. He was in Florida on Sunday and again today before heading to Illinois, one of the big Midwest states with primaries a week from Tuesday. Suggesting Forbes might not be in the race much longer, Kemp said Sunday that, "I have a lot of friends in the Dole camp and maybe, if he asked me, at the right time, to help build a bridge to the party or to Dole, I could plav that anti-aborti- 19." Fla. As Dole campaigned for Super Tuesday votes, there was some encouraging news about the week to follow. An Ohio Poll of 819 likely Republican voters showed Dole with 58 percent support in the state, up 10 points from a week earlier. Forbes, however, said he had no interest in such a dialogue and that he was in the race to stay. In recent days, however, two Forbes advisers have told associates they believe he will quit after the March 26 California primary unless Dole suddenly stumbles. The Taiwan tensions have fura relations ther cooled already convulsed by China's human rights violations, its failure to stop the pirating of U.S. products in violation of copyright laws and reported sales of nuclear equipment to Pakistan. But the Clinton administration officials stressed there will be no change in the current policy of engagement with China. "There'll be areas of our disagreement, and we've had long conversations with the Chinese just this week pointing out those areas of disagreement," Christopher said. id GET YOUR FREE, COMPLETE INITIAL llHaadachts 1 "We are very concerned and are looking at the situation very seriously," Madeleine Albright, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said on CNN's "Late Edition With Frank Sesno." She said the Chinese had been given clear warnings that this was not the time for a confrontation. China's announcement of the war games follow its missile tests off Taiwan's coast last week that also were condemned as a blatant attempt to influence Taiwan's first presidential elections later this month and stifle the movement on the island. Taiwan has been governed by 's the Nationalists who fled Mao communists in 1949, and Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province. Christopher said the recent actions taken by China "have been reckless, I think they've been risky, and ... smack of intimidation and coercion. So that is a situation of great concern to us." The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, in which the United States switched diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China, states American support for the peaceful reunification of Taiwan and the mainland and commits this country to help Taiwan defend itself. Albright stressed that this is not a commitment to send American troops to Taiwan if the island is invaded. Without defining what the U.S. response would be, she said the Chinese have been told clearly that the use of force would be a "grave matter to us." Republicans in Congress have demanded that the administration make a more clearcut commitment to using U.S. military forces to defend Taiwan. .r Tse-tung- 6,600-square-mi- le Brews work to hvoid explosion r fe looking forward to prospective U.S. to send warships near Taiwan 13' tops bro-Osc- ar himself from Kemp's remarks. For his part, Buchanan vowed to stay in the race through the August nominating convention. But his talk of trying to "amass as many delegates and votes as we can" was a clear sign Buchanan, barring what calls "a big jolt," is aiming now for leverage in platform and other convention business. "We are going to go to that convention, as we have every right to do, and quite frankly, I've got an obligation to represent the people who are behind me in those battles at the convention, especially the right-to-livotes." Simple math explains the dilemma facing Buchanan and Forbes: Dole has 392 of the 996 delegates needed to clinch nomination. Forbes is a distant second with 73 delegates and Buchanan third with 62. There are 362 more delegates at stake Tuesday, and Dole is favored to win every w here and pick up the bulk of them. "If one candidate should win seven states, this thing is virtually over," the Senate majority leader said a rally Sunday in Melbourne, Fla., that was held under a tent because of a driving rain.
