The glory is within the painter's brain." The idea for the series he is doing on the West had been germinating since he was a freshman driving to Stanford. From southern New Mexico across Arizona, through Southern California and up the coast, he is retracing his steps. Hurd expects perhaps 50 paintings from it. "It is an odyssey for self and country, this amorphous thing we call America, and it (the West) really is me. I love going East, but it's not my soul."
