A new breed of steed has arrived in horse country. White Cloud, stocking-legge- d foal of a quarter horse, sports racing stripes. Sired with the sperm of a Grant's zebra and foaled by a registered mare, White Cloud and others like him promise to be "the horses of the future," says owner Diane Richards. Make that the zorses of the future. When he's old enough to ride, White Cloud and future "zorses" will combine the speed and savvy of zebras with the friendliness of horses, Richards hopes. "Zebras have been running from lions for a long time, and they are real fast," she told a visitor. They're also smart, and they can jump. "You have to have fences," said Richards, who began the crossbreeding project three years ago in the rolling ranchland east of this San Bernardino Mountains resort. Richards and a few other zorse breeders around the country hope ot to cash in on a flourishing market for exotic animals, as evidenced by ads for all sorts of species and cross-speciin specialty publications. es :; Few people have patience enough, however, to make friends with a zebra. Skittish and intractable, they have defied domestication. Richards' zebras, Cyclone, 7, and Valentino, 5, can be ridden ' like mules. "I don't think any mule around can compare to what we can do with these guys," said Diana Starkey, who helps care for the stock. Since most zebras won't let humans even approach, sperm collection for artificial insemination can be tricky, even with "tame" zebras. For one thing, the mood must be right. Soothing music is piped into the barn Valentino shares with White Cloud and a mare pony. Richards leaves the lights on. Valentino is so used to Richards, she is able to trick him when he mounts the mare, diverting his sperm into an artificial vagina. A drug NEW YORK reduce skin the on to spread wrinkles might also be able to prevent the effects of years of exposure to the sun, suggests a study released today. When applied to the skin of volunteers before they got a dose of ultraviolet light, the drug sharply reduced the production of skin enzymes that might promote wrinkling. The new work is reported in today's issue of the journal Nature by Gary J. Fisher, Dr. John J. Voorhees and colleagues at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. In a statement, the researchers declined to discuss the work, been saying Renova had not approved for prevention of wrinkles or other sun damage. The Nature paper does not indicate any industry funding. . Dr. John Epstein, clinical professor of dermatology at the A University of California at San Francisco, noted that it hasn't been shown whether tretinoin or a second drug used in the study actually prevent yet wrinkling. And Dr. David Bickers, chairman of the dermatology department at the Columbia I Iniversitv Colleec of Physi cians and Surgeons, cautioned that extrapolating trom tne short-terexperiment to the of sun expoeffects long-tersure is "fraught with hazard." The other drug in the study, a steroid used in skin creams to reduce inflammation, worked about as well as tretinoin. These substances can be damaged by certain enzymes created by skin cells. The new work showed that small doses of UVB stimulate production of the damaging enzymes. The researchers theorized that over decades, repeated assaults on the collagen and elastin by the enzymes could cause premature wrinkling. They also found that if tretinoin or the steroid was applied to the skin before the UVB dose was given, the amounts of enzymes produced after UVB exposure were sharply reduced. Tretinoin was also shown to suppress a genetic switch that turns on enzyme , production. Epstein said it's not known whether the kind of damage caused by the enzymes actually leads to wrinkling. Dr. Sheldon Pinnell, chief of dermatology at Duke University, said recent studies suggest that ultraviolet light other than UVB may also contribute to -- & 181(0 : & . wrinkling. The effect of tretinoin on that is not known, MJWfc he said. Currently, to lower the risk of premature wrinkling from sun exposure, dermatologists recommend sunscreens, long hats d sleeves, and avoiding the midday sun. The study also found that a UVB dose equal to only two or three minutes of summer sunshine on unprotected skin can turn on production of the enzymes, dermatologist Dr. Barbara Gilchrest said. That suggests that just the "incidental exposures every single person gets while walking around" are enough to do harm, said Gilchrest, a professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. And if a person spends all day in the sun, even the best sunscreen could not keep out such a tiny dose of UVB, she said. 0O broad-brimme- 1 .
