Our oldest daughter. Marcie. was 2 12 years old and our twin sons. Joel and Kevin, wouldn't be a year old until July 1977- - My mother, knowing our need to have a day to ourselves, volunteered to babysit while my husband and I took an afternoon off. We looked in the Boise paper and di scoveied a new movk show -if5g there called "Star Wars" My husband is a huge science fiction fan and I enjoyed "Star Trek." so we ventured to Boise (about an hpur's drive) to try our luck with an unkiiown entity. ' From the first moment, we imew this was something special. The special effects were awesome for its day. the characters were w itii good vs. evil and yip knew where you stood from tiie beginning. We couldn't wait to tell our families and friend about this WunderfiuL uplifting movie. We've seeu it countless times on video .and look forward to eeing it again m she bog screen. It's a classic! That way. you'll at least have the chance to hear how and why it is that the Provo resident has never seen any of the "Star Wars" films, either in the theater or on v ideo. "'Star Wars" always seemed like such a boy thing." Losee begins. "I guess I'm just a girly girl. Her voice trails off and her eves follow suit she's obv iously had to explain this dozens of times before. fast food Oddly enough, the 21 year-old restaurant employee (she requested the name of her workplace be withheld to protect her very life) and native of Lavion has a friend in none other than Came Fisher, the actress who portrayed Leia Organa. the one-tim- e princess of Aideraan and leader of the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire, in the "Star Wars" trilogy. In an interview published in the autumn 1994 edition of the "Star Wars Insider. the magazine of the official "Star Wars fan club. Fisher had this to say about her role in the "Star Wars films: "I w as the only girl in this o?t of adolescent boy" fantasy." Scratch one up for the girly girls. The fact that Losee hasn't seen the films doesn't mean that she's been left completely out of the loop: instead, she sometimes finds herself in social situations where a piece of "Star Wars" lingo suddenly pops up and that's when the problems begin. Losee can readily identify several key characters from the trilogy, including Darth Vader. Voda and "... that big blob " thing "Big blob thing?" I think to mvself. "Who is she talking about'." Then, it dawns on me. "Oh. sou mean Jabba the Hutt." I say. "Yeah. Jabba the Hutt." she says. Scratch one up for the adolescent boys. Losee says that she. herself, is moderately surprised that she's never seen any of the films. She describes herself as a regular cinema visitor and is most interested in romantic comedies. She even says she'll see almost anything once, as long as she thinks it might be interesting. But w hen it comes to a science fiction film, however, a barrier or. more accurately, a positronic force field goes up between her and the cinema turnstvle. "A lot of times. I don't understand them." Losee says of sci-- fi films in general. She explains that she gets lost in the complex plot mechanisms that sci-f- i films often use as tools to resolve plot conflicts: they often leave her feeling like she's missing something that ought to be as plain as day. But if promptings and use our talents for good, we w ill be led on the right paths; if not. we will become agents of evil. When we walked out of the theater. David said. "Well. now. aren't you glad I dragged you out to this movk'? All I could think to do at the time was smile and sheepishly admit my error in judgment but if he were here today. I would say. StiH. it can't be eav for someone who has never seen "Star Wars" to move around in broad daylight in America in 1997. My brothers and I started collecting and enjoved playing with the "Star Wars" tovs. Every birthday and Christinas, we received a new toy and spent our spare money buying the action figures.
