The board's executive committee will meet in Salt Lake next Friday. The board had not planned to meet again until Jan. 14. Salt Lake spokesman Frank Zang said Saturday that the meeting was moved up at the urging of organizing committee president Frank Joklik so members could be apprised of the situation. "There is only one item on the agenda this," said John U.S. Krimsky, Olympic Committee's deputy secretary general, referring to the controhigh-leve- 's games. The controversy centers on a described scholarship fund as "humanitarian aid" by Salt Lake officials. The program provided nearly $400,000 in tuition and other assistance to 13 individuals including six relatives of. IOC members, mostly from Africa. Senior Swiss IOC member Marc Hodler, who heads the IOC's oversight panel for the 2002 games, has described the fund as a "bribe" to sway the votes of IOC members. Salt Lake won the games by a land 4.5." Olympic Games. "To my knowledge, there has always, always, been a certain part of the vote given to corruption," he said, in setting off the biggest ethics scandal in the history of the organization. Hodler specifically cited a pattern of bribery and other ethical malpractice in the bidding and selection of at least four Olympic host cities Nagano, Atlanta; Japan; Sydney, Australia; and Salt Lake City. He also cited bribes of up to $1 million and payoffs of up to $5 million. The IOC quickly "disassociated" itself from Hodler's allegations, saying he was voicing his personal opinions. However, it did not deny his charges. Those charges came not from a maverick or discredited official, but from one of the IOC's elder statesmen and close confidant of IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch. Hodler, a Swiss lawyer who recently turned 80, has been on the IOC since 1963, making Brazil's Joao and him Havelange the organization's members. longest-servinEarlier this year, Hodler stepped down after 47 years as president of the International Ski Federation.
