The genre has enjoyed a surge of mainstream popularity in the last year or so, with peo- pie suddenly discovering the characterized by horns, style and reggae rhythms guitars on their radios. But ska has been around for a couple decades, and it's been popular in Utah for almost that long. It is fitting, then, that if someone's going to put together a compilation of local music, it should be a compilation of the best Utah ska. Someone has done just that, in the form of a double-Ccalled "Send Help: The Utah Ska Compilation." Fans of the local ska scene should be salivating at this collection: 38 songs by 17 bands, nearly two hours of music. Many of the bands are now defunct; several songs can be found on this compilation and nowhere else. The bands are arranged more or less in chronological order, beginning with 004, whose style was technically ska but whose very funny "I Ekn't Love You" could almost pass for ;i pop song by a '60s girl group. Then we go onto Swim d Herschel Swim, a be to considered group among the pioneers of the Utah ska movement, and definitely an inspiration for later bands like Stretch Armstrong. Nectar, Insatiable, Stretch, Model Citizen, Rhythm Fish, The Shriners. My Man Friday, Sam I Am, 13, Soulutions , Sturgeon General, Pastry Bandits, Id and the Superegos, Mr. Goon, and Catfische each follow, presenting two or three songs each. These bands are based all up and down the Wasatch Front and throughout Utah, though several of them have long since broken up. leaving behind only a few recordings of some really great songs. Obviously a set like this is going to have highlights and lowlights. Bands like Nectar and Pastry Bandits seem less than inspired, though their inclusion here adds to the overall flavor and history of ska in Utah, even if their music isn't particularly noteworthy. And some would disagree with using "Big Hair" and "No Excuses" to represent the "best" work of Stretch and My Man Friday, respectively. If anything, this set shows the diversity that can exist and still be considered "ska." One set lacks is thing the double-Cliner notes of any kind. There is IS literally no material inside the set. You would expect at LEAST a listing of the bands and how to contact the ones that are still around, perhaps a roster of the individual performers. But no, there's nothing. This is unfortunate, since such a historic compilation would have been the perfect opportunity for someone to write a good, brief history of ska music in Utah.
