Along the way, the apologist types managed to argue the problems in Dublin came because the police were too lenient, the problems in Bruges came because the police were too tough, and the problems in Zaragoza came because the Spanish sold tickets to unauthorized fans. Nobody wanted to blame the hooligans. And then came Sunday . It was Manchester United against Crystal Palace in an English Football Association Cup semifinal game. These teams and their fans have a terrible recent history. Two years ngo, a Crystal Palace fan received multiple stab wounds at a game between the two teams. Earlier this year, a Manchester United player, Eric Cantona, went into the stands to karate kick a heckling Crystal Palace fan. All so lovely. Then came Sunday. Eight miles from the stadium, some bar heckling between the fans of both teams turned ugly, then deadly. A hundred-or-s- o people were going at it when it happened; a Crystal Palace fan, Paul Nixon, was hit by a brick, knocked over, and then crushed to death by a bus. Because the game between the teams ended in a tie, a replay was called for. The Crystal Palace people wanted it delayed 10 days out of a sign of respect for the dead fan and to allow tempers to cool . The FA people ruled against that, and the replay was held on Wednesday, only three days after the death. As a result, Crystal lis Coach Jason Patterson stressed improved rebounding as a major team goal during their pre-gapractice session and the Utah State AAU champs responded with success in that area of their game. Wesley led the team with nine rebounds, followed by seven from Will Whitaker and six from Wilson. Chambers and Spencer Abney each added five. This win placed Utah Valley in the tournament semifinals against the host All-Stteam, the Las VeBoth teams use a simigas Players. lar style of game. Even though the desert winds have now quieted down, the Utah Valley hoopsters hope to continue their whirlwind on the court. ar up-tem- Palace officials asked their fans to boycott the game. And they did. Attendance was less than 18,000 for Manchester United's victory, the lowest for an FA Cup semifinal since World War II. And it was accompanied by this plea from a Manchester United official: "The way to peace has to be found. We must get rid of hool igans once and for al . " It is clearly a different world. Certainly, we have our sports-relate- d problems here. We don't know how to celebrate victories 1 anymore. Every championship becomes an excuse for civil disobedience. It's a prublem that just gets worse, too. But that's isolated stuff. That isn't something that appears to be embedded in the very fabric of our games. Soccer is different. It's different in England specifically. And suddenly, Don Fehr and Bud Sclig and three-hobaseball games don't look nearly so bad. ur first 300 qame By JOHN BEST Special to The Daily Herald Provoan Ken Jones has been bowling for 31 years. (P) JOT) He should get married every week. "Yeah, maybe so," he said with a grin after the game. The fireworks appeared to be over. But not so. In the top of the eighth, Kelly Stratton, Utah's top hitter who was playing with a pulled hamstring, doubled to open the inning. A single and walk loaded the bases for Matt Hagan, who was then hit by a pitch. But umpire Mike Andrews ruled he hadn't made any attempt to avoid the pitch and wouldn't award Hagan first base. That brought Utah coach Steve Gillispie onto the field. He argued vehemently, finally bumping Andrews, who ejected him from the 11-- 6. "Scott really didn't have his best stuff today, but for seven innings, he was in command," Pullins said. "But he got a little tired, ahfl Hagan is a good hitter who made him pay for making a mistake, "On this field, when it gets a little cold and windy, it can be home run city. You saw how many balls went out today. It's tough for pitchers." Mike Nielsen relieved and got out of the inning, but not 'before a the bassingle and walk es. Roberts gave BYU some momentum back by jumping on the first pitch in the bottom of the eighth and sending it out of the sinpark. Shane Wilson's two-rui- n gle later in the inning gave thcCou-gars- a 14-- 6 lead. But the Utes weren't through, getting a home run of their own from Kevin Bracy and back-to-badoubles from Ben Mxrziale ck (Spanish Fork High) and5 Casey game. Before he left, Gillispie threw an equipment bag onto the field, scattering bats and balls around. The interruption seemed to in Child (Mountain View Higrj)5n the frame to score three more riiiis before Nate Truax popped out end the game. Before that hapfpned. umpire Jim Gilbert was hitby a foul ball behind the first bi$ line ! off the bat of Hagan. Never a dull moment, indped.
