Show Page B4 - THE DAILY HERALD, Provo, Utah, Tuesday, February 28, 1995 Technology transfer generates BYU Public Communications Although Brigham Young University is not considered a major research university, licenses sold to companies for research done at BYU generated more than $1 million last year. Lynn Astle, director of BYU's Technology Transfer Office, said BYU ranks in the top 30 universities in the United States in revenues collected on licensed technol- ogies. "Based on the $1 million mark we reached, we ranked about 30th last year," he said. "The year before we ranked 47th." BYU's Technology Transfer Office is responsible for maintaining all intellectual property developed on campus and for licensing it to industry or otherwise seeing it is used commercially. Astle says BYU currently has 58 active technology licenses, which is about average for a university of this size. What is unusual is the amount of royalty income the Technology Transfer Office puts back into research. Astle estimates BYU puts about twice as much back into research as any other university. "We don't take much out tor overhead or for getting patents." he said. "Here at BYU, faculty members can give up their share of search at the university. Industrial sponsorship is another unique aspect of research at BYU. Astle said 45 percent of BYU's sponsored research is industrial, which is much higher than the five percent national average. "One reason we receive so much industry sponsorship is because a lot of our faculty come from industry and bring those alliances with them," he said. He also said the College of Engineering has an annual Alliance With Industry conference where industry representatives are invited to speak and presentations about BYU's capabilities are made. This helps to build good relationships with industrial sponsors and other potential sponsors. Having good faculty is also extremely important, Astle said. "We have a very productive and creative faculty," he said. "I can only sell something that is good and that is what they do. " The first BYU technology to be licensed was a vaccine preventing cholera in turkeys, developed by Marcus Jensen in the Microbiology Department. First licensed to the Schering Corporation in 1985, the vaccine reduced turkey mortal the income and put it in a research account and the university matches that amount dollar for dollar, which puts a lot going back to more research." At BYU, anything developed during a faculty member's time at the university belongs to the university, Astle said. This means BYU has the rights to technology developed at the university. However, Astle said faculty receives 45 percent of royalties from licensed technologies. Some faculty choose to put the proceeds into university research accounts. "Six civil engineering professors who have an agreement to put money back to help their students do more research are among some professors who give proceeds back to the university," he said. The college in which a technology is developed receives 27.5 pe cent of royalties and the remaining, 27.5 percent goes to the Technology Transfer Office. Astle said about half of that amount goes to an endowment fund to support re County nominates firm for award Oak Canyon By MYRNA TRAUNTVEIN Special to The Daily Herald NEPHI missioners - Juab County Comagreed to nominate e Consultants Inc., for a Six County award. Royalties from Schering and other companies continues to support research in the Microbiology Department. Another technology making a contribution to society is a drug developed by Roland Robins for the treatment of rare leukemias. Leustatin cures almost all patients treated with it and its toxicity is so low it can be administered at home. Ortho Biotech has been given an exclusive license to BYU's patent for this drug. The Engineering Computer Graphics Laboratory in the Civil Engineering Department has also been a successful research group. It has developed software for computer graphics and many of the graphics seen in the media are based on its work. BYU's Technology Transfer e Office started operations six years ago. Astle said faculty members are encouraged to come in and discuss the possible commercial potential of products or refull-tim- search. "Our first objective is to help faculty pursue opportunities," he said. are Jennifer Larsen, David Parkes, Scott Doman and Joanne Johnson. Oak Canyon's team was coached by Nikki Hardy.
