Show Page A10 — THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Monday, March 9, 1992 Swiss mime troupe Metropolitan Opera celebrates 25th anniversary coming to Salt Lake A galaxy of opera’s greatest Lincoln Center, the wombg-lon stars join forces in “ The Metro— 5pecial features one act each of 8 politan Opera’s Silver Anniversa- Verdi’s “Rigoletto” and “Oteland Johann Strauss’ “Die 19 at 8 pm, the spectacular Swiss Mask/Mime troupe called “Mummenschanz" comes to the Capitol Theatre with a “best of” program of those very special works that audiences have cheered on each of its visits to this country over the past two decades. Through their extraordinary wrappings and unique combination of masks and movement. Mummenschanz reveals a fantastic world filled with delightful and amusing characters that offers a tremendous journey into the imagination. “They have never been matched," exclaims the LA Times, “and they should never be missed." Although the trio known as ”Mummenschanz“ presented its first program in 1972 as a fringe event at the Avignon Festival. the origins of their performances date back to 1969, when Bernie Schurch and Andres Bossard staged their first show together. Originally the two Swiss mimes combined spoken dialogue with mask sketches to create fantastic and humorous effects, but upon meeting Floriana Frassetto. anoth- “Mummenschanz” (meaning “masquerade" or “mummery"). Since its initial engagements, the troupe has performed through— out the world — including South America, Japan, Israel and the USSR — and has regularly toured the United States, captivating audi— ences with its unique mixture of acting, mime, dance, puppetry and magic. In Europe, Mummen— schanz has appeared at the Edinburgh and Spoleto Festivals as well as in London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Madrid, Copen~ hagen and Amsterdam. In New York City, the trio performed for three years on Broadway at the Bijou Theatre. After a period spent developing new material in Zurich, the original cast returned in 1984 with “The New Show" and continued on to their second Broadway run in 1986. The year 1989 a special show called “The Best of Mummenschanz" was created to celebrate the troupe‘s 20th anniversary. This program is now touring the world. Tickets for Mummenschanz are $18, $16 and $14 at the Capitol Theatre box office (355-ARTS), er student of mime, and traveling Kingsbury Hall (581-7100) and all to perform in Paris, they dropped all the spoken items to overcome the language barrier. From that point onward their programs relied solely upon mime and mask. and became appropriately named Smith‘s Tix outlets (467-5996).
